Imagine Avengers Academy AU! Tony doesn't know why Sam is sky-racing Union Jack on his jet pack but the reason becomes clear when Sam wins the race and promptly asks Tony out on a date.
Tony had wanted to spend the daywith Sam flying lazy circles over the campus, but Sam was nowhere to be found.
Tony felt just the tiniest bithurt, flying with Sam had become something of a regular thing for them, andTony hated to miss it, especially when he didnât know why.
He went all over the campus untilhe came back to the mission board where a lot of people were gathered.
âHey, whatâs going on and why didno one tell me?â Tony asked Wasp, who was standing right in front of themission board and looked up.
âWeâre watching the race,â she saidand pointed up where Sam and Union Jack were both racing in circles.
There was a small pang somewhere inTonyâs chest; he had thought he was the only one Sam enjoyed flying with, but obviously,he had been wrong.
âWhy are they racing?â Tony asked, gaze avoiding the figures in the sky.
âI am not actually sure, but theywere very adamant on doing this,â Natasha said to his right.
âThey seem to have a lot ofâŠfun,âTony weakly said, too hurt by the fact that Sam chose to race with Union Jackon their usual time of flying and not even bothering to tell Tony about it.
âThey have been dancing around eachother all week long,â Steve mused with a long look at the still racing figures.
âIâŠI didnât know they had a thing,â Tony eventually managed andSteve shrugged.
âNot sure myself actually. WheneverSam talks about Jack he seems, angry almost, agitated. I would never havethought it was about flying.â
Tony crossed his arms in front ofhis chest, stubbornly keeping himself from saying that he was the one who had thing with Sam about flying. Sam had alwaysseemed happy just lazily flying around with Tony. If he had wanted races, Tonywould have given them to him without struggle. He wanted Sam to be happy and ifjust flying with Tony and occasionally talking didnât do it for him, Tony wouldlearn to adapt.
But apparently, it was already toolate to keep Sam at his side.
Everyone around him suddenly brokeout into cheers, jumping up and down and yelling Samâs name. It looked like Samhad won then.
Tony turned away before Sam andJack could shake hands or smile at each other or something equally horrible, but suddenly Sam came up jogging beside him.
âHey Tony!â he breathlessly calledout. âTony, wait, did you see the race? I beat him right up there, did you see?âSam excitedly said and Tony weakly nodded.
âYeah, I guess I did.Congratulations. Heâll want to do a re-match, right? I guess tomorrow at thesame time?â
âActually I was kinda hoping to getmy prize tomorrow,â Sam said and stopped Tony with a hand to his arm.
âWhatâs your prize?â Tony asked, more because Sam really wanted him to ask and wouldnât let go before that, thanbecause Tony wanted to know.
âYou,â Sam said with a big smile. âWell, not you actually, that would be creepy, gambling about a human like that, butwe, eh, raced because we both wanted to ask you out on a date and I won, so Iget to ask you out now.â
Sam took a deep breath and Tonystared in wonder at him.
âTony,â he asked, suddenly nervousand solemnly. âWould you do me the honour of going out with me tomorrow?â
Tony was lost for words, this wasas far away from the reason for the race as he had expected, but he managed tonod.
âIs that a yes?â Sam asked and Tonylaughed.
âThatâs a yes,â Tony gave back, happy as he could be, and Sam looked delighted.
âUntil tomorrow then,â Sam said, squeezed his hand quickly, and then darted away again.
âUntil tomorrow,â Tony whispered toSamâs retreating back. He couldnât wait for the next day to come.
