CHURCH. For some reason, I always get concerned about bursting into flames when I enter a church. It probably comes from the opening title sequence of Forever Knight, an early ’90s late night syndicated show about a modern day vampire. I loved the first season. Seasons two and three were caca. In this case, I didn’t burst into flame or even feel a little warm. This was shot in existing light at ASA 16K, ƒ3.5, at 1/320 of a second. TEST SHOT. This was a test shot for lighting. Their expressions really make the photo work. Carina is totally rockin’ that casual t-shirt and denim look while Leanne looks great in that black dress. FLAG MAKERS. I don’t think they’re making flags in there anymore. I somehow got the vibe that the company in that office worked with clothing or travel. I discovered a number of painted signs in San Francisco similar to Flag Makers in the early ’90s. I saw them on walls everywhere. There were quite a few in SOMA. I thought, “That’s gonna make a great photo story for somebody but not me.” I never know what to do with these photos. I think they’re interesting when I capture them but I find them boring when I’m sorting. After I edit them, I find them to be not too boring. It would have been difficult for me to go and shoot all the painted signs back then with this conflict in my head. Then again I could’ve scored a publishing deal with Chronicle Books for those photos. They were publishing books on kitschy motels, neon signs, people’s hips, etc. . REGRET: HIGHLAND PARK DARK ORIGINS. Actually, I have no regrets. I stand by the life I have lived and the decisions I have made. I’ve had a great time and if I had to do it all again, I’d make completely different choices still with no regrets. In this case, there is something I wish I had done. Why didn’t just sweep the last remaining bottles into my cart and buy them all? I was concerned about getting an NAS single malt. I had just tried one from Trader Joe’s and had a bad experience. This was more expensive (~$30USD). Although Highland Park is my favorite distiller, this miigh be some rot-gut swill they’re just trying to unload on Cosco cheapskates. Boy was I wrong. This was one of the best single malts I’ve ever tasted. It changed my mind about NAS scotch. A week later, Costco was out of stock. I went to Bevmo and bought their last bottle at a slightly higher price (~$37USD). Haighland Park Dark Origins is gone (except for the collectors who have their bottles) but I’ll always have the memories of that outstanding whisky. FYI: Magnus is also damn good. .
