As a very belated father’s day present, I offered my lovely dad the choice of where he would like to be taken for dinner. His response:
‘The best curry in the South please’.
Translation: Sammi’s in Lower Parkstone.
Sammi’s has long been the regular haunt for the local tribe of Bournemouth and Poole over the past 17 years. It’s where the girls and I would celebrate many a birthday from the age of 16, celebrate GCSE and A Level results, and where I often re-visit with my father on special occassions.
A big part of why people love this place so much, aside from the high quality of the food, is Sammi himself. He’s such a character, and will long be the reason why people keep coming back. Not every restaurant owner allows you to come into the open kitchen and cook some dishes on your birthday. And he remembers everybody’s name as well. My father hadn’t been in for years and he greeted him like an old friend.
But let’s get on to that aforementioned high quality of food. Pictured above is our usual order (brace yourself):
Meat phall, chicken bhuna, thakka dhaal, sag aloo, bombay potatoes, pashwari naan, garlic naan, chipati, pilau rice. Not to mention the pre-dinner poppadoms.
And yes, between two, we devoured all of it. Safe to say I left feeling incredibly stuffed and proceeded to lie down on the lounge floor once safely back in the flat.
Even writing this I’m looking forward to my next visit already. I’m sure my dad won’t need much convincing.
