The sound of music thumped softly through the bar as the sound of laughter drifted through your ears. Your friends happily conversed between themselves as you continued to nurse your second drink of the night. It wasnât often you found yourself in the company of so many of your friends at once but now that finals were over youâd all found yourselves finally free.
âYou okay?â A hand squeezed yours under the table pulling your attention to the person beside you. You smiled squeezing Samâs hand back. âIâm fine.â You leaned forward slightly lowering your voice. He smiled back before moving his hand to rub small circles on your thigh.
This thing between you both was new. Youâd told yourself that you would wait until youâd finished college before you got involved with someone but all that had been thrown out the window the minute youâd met Sam. Youâd both decided to keep quiet about your budding relationship though that was easier said than done.Â
Finishing the last of his drink Sam stood from the table, his hand left your tigh and you frowned slightly at the lost warmth. âI'm gonna go grab another drink. Anyone else?â He paused for a moment and you watched in amusement as multiple hands shot in the air with various shouts of drinks accompanying them. âIâll help.â You said standing from your seat.
Your friends quickly went back to their conversations as the two of you walked into the crowd. The moment you were far enough into the crowd you felt Samâs hand wrap around yours as he pulled you towards a corner. âI thought we were going to the bar?â You laughed feeling your back hit the wall. Sam grinned moving his hands to your waist before leaning down. âWe are, we're just making a small stop first.âÂ
You felt him press his lips to yours for a moment before he pulled back placing his forehead against yours. âWe canât be too long there gonna get suspicious.â Your voice was quiet as you spoke. A small shiver ran through you at the feel of his breath ghosting your lips.
âThere occupied for a little longer at least.â He chuckled quietly throwing a glance over his shoulder before looking back to you. âIâve not seen you alone all week, excuse me for wanting some time alone.â A small gasp of surprise left your lips as you felt him kiss you again. His hand moved to cup the back of your head as he moved almost impossibly closer, crowding into your space.Â
After a moment you pulled back, small pants leaving your lips. âOkay. We need to actually go get the drinks now.â You grabbed his hand pulling him towards the bar. As you reached the bar he wrapped an arm over your shoulder pulling you into his side.Â
A small thrill ran through you as he listed off the drinks, his thumb slowly rubbing circles on your shoulder. You threw a small glance behind your shoulder a small smile growing on your lips at the sight of your friends still just as oblivious as theyâd been before.Â

In the morning, you rolled out of bed and noticed for the first time how drab your new home was. The brightest colors in the place were the faded blue curtains hanging from the sink, and they were basically grey. So you decided to do something crazy: you were going to paint the kitchen floor.
It had to be a nice color, something you wouldnât get sick of, and it definitely had to be bright. Youâd spent enough time being a dull person, never daring to stand out or believe you were special, but enough was enough. So as you walked the 3 miles back into town, you decided to buy some paint along with the rest of the things you needed.
The gulls screeched as you made your way into the same convenient store from before, entering through the greenhouse again because you thought it was pretty. All of the potted plants, sporting flowers of every color and leaves of every shape, they made you happy in a way that having a painted floor undoubtedly would too.
For a few minutes you walked through the isles, putting things such as a toothbrush and some canned goods into your bag. The store was relatively quiet in the early morning, and you were the only person in the store- or at least you thought so.
When you walked up the seemingly empty counter to pay, suddenly a little girl popped up from beneath it. She dragged a chair over to the other side and stood on it, making herself eye level with you before grinning and saying, âHi!!â
âHi,â You smiled back, watching in surprise as she started checking out the items in your back, âHey are your mom or dad around?â
âNope!â She replied cheerily as she continued clicking buttons on the cash register, âBut I can help you, are you looking for anything in particular?â
âWell now that you ask, do you have any paint?â
Her blue eyes lit up and she gave you a gap-toothed smile before replying, âYes! Well, we have this book, and it has alll the different colors you can paint. Itâs so big, I have to have my Dad help my carry it, or sometimes my brother even though Iâm definitely stronger than him! What are you painting?â
âMy kitchen floor,â You responded, watching as the girl started giggling from behind the counter, âThe floor?â
"What?â You couldnât stop yourself from grinning along with her as you asked, âWhyâs that funny?â
âWell, because you usually donât paint floors!â She shrugged and started squirming out of curiosity, âYou usually put a rug on them or something like that,â
âWell,â You rested your forearms on the counter and leaned in closer, âIâm thinking that I want to brighten the place up. So, whatâs a happy color? Whatâs a really bright one?â
âHm,â She took a moment to consider it before pointing to her sundress and saying, âThereâs yellow!â
âYellow?â
âYeah!â She started grinning and did a little curtsy, motioning her arms around the store, âThe color of the sun,â
âOkay, alright, I think you just sold me on that!â You replied, watching as she jumped from the chair and started running to the back of the store, âI can go get some samples of that for you!! Iâm Lexie by the way!â
âOkay, thanks, Iâm (Y/N)!â You called back, watching as her sunny little figure disappeared behind a row of shelves.
The girl, Lexie was her name, was absolutely adorable. She had these dimples that poked tiny holes in her cheeks when she smiled, which was a lot during your conversation. Sheâd seemed so happy over something as trivial as helping you out, and you saw her practically bounce away to retrieve the samples. Honestly you wouldâve been perfectly fine waiting for her to return to finish paying, but instead you were greeted with a familiar face.
The same man from the day before walked through the door with a jingle of its bell, âWow, youâre still here?â
âYeah,â You chuckled and shifted awkwardly on your feet as he approached the counter.
âHere, let me, uh, let me check you out.â The man reached for your basket and started loading the remaining objects into a bag, âSorry itâs just that usually people are just passing through, you know? Itâs kinda a pit stop, ten minutes is usually enough.â
âI like it,â You responded, looking around the room as he started on your groceries.
He stared up at you and seemed to begin to say something, but instead he was cut off by Lexie returning with an enormous book in her arms, âFOUND IT!â
âOh, no no no, sweetheart thatâs not for playing,â The man reached his arm out as Lexie clambered up the chair and handed the book to you, âNo, Dad she needs to paint the floor in her kitchen!â
âThanks,â You said, motioning to the book that was being stuffed into your bag by Lexie, âI can, uh, I can take it home?â
âYeah, oh yeah, definitely,â The man responded, looking up briefly as he said, âJust pick a color and weâll order it up for you.â
He then started swiping your items and pressing buttons on the cash register, before tossing them to Lexie who would stuff them in the bag, âAlright, we got rice. Ah, basmati, the King of rices!â
âYum!â Lexie chorused as she dropped it to the bottom of your bag, âMy favorite!â
âWow,â Your brow rose in surprise, âGood catch, Lexieâ
âThanks!â She responded before catching the next one with one hand and raising it up above her head, âLight bulb- ding!â
âAlright, tuna, soapâŚâ The green eyed man listed off your items one by one before tossing them to Lexie, who repeated what he said before stuffing them into your bag. The two of them went on like that for another minute, working in perfect tandem until all of your items were packed and it was time to pay.Â
â18 even,â He looked up at you when he was done, and you started rummaging through your wallet, âHere, thanks.â
âBAG!â Lexie pushed the paper bundle across the counter and into your arms, âThanks for shopping!â
âTake a book,â The man pointed to a small stand to your left, âTheyâre free! People, you know, they vacation and leave all these books, so take one theyâre free.â
âAlright,â You turned and grabbed the closest one, âWell thank you, Lexie. And thank you too,â
âAnytime, hey my nameâs Sam by the way!â The man called after you as you walked out through the storeâs greenhouse.Â
â(Y/N)!â You called back, feeling bolder but not entirely knowing why.
