this is the 1099th in my "when i post my masterpiece" series: sam messer -- "underwood" (2017)
"i know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, i'll go to it laughing" ... herman melville "i've been making paintings of the typewriter for over 20 years now and i think that in this show particularly, i think if anyone looks at them they realize you know they can see the form but i think intuitively they understand that it just starts to speak to the moment we are in ... at least hopefully that's my goal, right? where things are hard to put language together, hard to communicate, hard, you know, things are breaking down, yet we are trying to maintain something" ... sam messer "for some, a typewriter is an antiquated piece of machinery, akin to a rotary telephone. it predates digital technologies and relies on forcefully tapping the keys. writing on a typewriter is much different than using a computer. it is hardly silent and often associated with a succession of loud clicks. in addition, one must insert a piece of paper to receive the ink, making the typing of numerous pages a laborious process" ... jody zellen "i know not all that may be laughing, but be that as it may, i'll go to it faffing" ... al janik
