Underwood 315
Since it took me quite some time to figure this out:
if you own an underwood 315 typewriter, which is in dire need of cleaning:
Take of the plate with the branding, by pulling it up and towards you. Softly, it has some resistance to it, but it shouldn't be too much. children might need assistance with this
Turn over the patient, on the blue metal strip near the "keys" are 4 very very delicate small screws. I undid all of them. You might not have to- cause only two are connected to the outer frame. Requires further testing.
If you have a plate here covering the view into your typewriter, remove it by dislocating the rubber feet: pinch/press on the short side to or off your direction. Carefully lift the plate.
Turn you specimen over back. Inspect it.
Move the carriage (the thing that moves from right to left while you type, and also where the paper sits on) out of the way to get to 2 screws.
Elevated the typewriter - on a small box, the case in which the thing came, whatever is on hand and you don't mind getting scratched or dirty.
Unscrew the two top bolts, move the carriage completely to your right and also shift the whole typewriter, so that a small overhang is created. The outer case should be loose. Lift it tilt it and follow the direction of the carriage very carefully. Especially if you want to avoid scratching things.
Be proud. The outer plastic frame should sit next to its innards.
Another few notes on that:
TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING BEFORE DISASSEMBLING
TAKE PICTURES BEFORE YOU CLEAN, AFTER ASSEMBLY
TAKE MULTIPLE PICTURES WITH DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCES/ ANGLES
I unscrewed all 4 small bolts on the blue metal strip. A hassle putting that thing back again. Avoid it if you can. But it gets you access to the place where keys enter the holes/metal frame. Dust is collected easily here. The upper blue strip will also be naughty and scratch the outer casing and will not be wanted to be inserted back again. Take a photo before dismantling and notice the slit in the case where the upper blue strip should insert nicely. Notice the bent of the upper blue metal strip.
Recommend putting all bits and bob in a cup or jar or similar container temporarily. I left them for 15 minutes and a few parts tried to throw themselves into the depth of the abyss - also known as floor.
I only lost 2 springs, one bigger (while cleaning) and a small one was found (after putting it back) I am scared, but also relieved.
I might add stuff to this. I might not. at least there is one instruction talking about that... My machine might have been serviced between its conception and 2023 (date of purchase), so it was quite clean. Only some dirt from ribbon and gunk from someone spraying wd40 in it (twas me, I confess). My fingers hurt form the metal and rubbing and scrubbing.
Don't use harsh cleaning detergents on the machine.
