The Oxford Dictionary defines the word 'faff' as "to spend time in ineffectual activity" but in Hidden Valley it has a slightly different meaning and is sometimes a way of life. Lucky for this dirtbag before climber, faffing happens almost as much as climbing and well, I'm down to faff with the best of them... Packing up the bandit to take lots of dirty dudes for hot springs soaks, cooking family style Dutch oven meals together, coming up with random games and contests, doing stick & poke tattoos, chasm runs, iron door missions or just hiding away from the wind in someone's van. There is a lot of fuckin around going on out here. And I'm sorry I've been off the grid and not getting anyone's messages for weeks but I have a lot of faffing to do in Joshua tree. Missed out on an adoption anniversary post for this kid, when I was traveling cross country, and much like @sailortheroaddog himself, his birthday is a mystery. But today, at a local farmers market, I was told my dog was the best behaved dog there. After one year + three months of forming a deeper bond with this guy, working through food aggression & other defensive mechanisms learned from an abusive former life, loving even though he wasn't comfortable with physical affection, tedious training with positive reinforcement, managing my time around his separation anxiety & wild spurts of energy, learning that allergies were making him aggravated & uncomfortable, guiding him through new experiences like swimming & scrambling, and opting out of activities & locations in order to put my fur babe first, hearing more compliments than I can count on my dog's behavior in one day, is more cause for celebration than whatever day this fluffy wolf-bear was brought into this world and a first life that this dog momma is going to spend the rest of his life trying to make up for. #humanssuck #adoptdontshop #sailortheroaddog

It just seemed that even though I was making decisions to make my own happiness, luck just wasn't on my side and well, the world in general seemed to have crappy luck in 2016, too. I got to start 2017 on a fresh page, one free of romantic relationships, attachments, expectations or even resolutions. I wanted to start this new chapter with a blank space and clear head. So I reflected on the last year quite a bit before that chapter of my life ended. I learned a lot from 2016 and the people that year brought to my life. Some lessons were harder to learn than others and after reflecting on the learnings of 2016, I realized the best way to take on 2017 is to just be me and let the good & bad roll in and out of my life in its own balance... Because there will always be a balance in life, if you let it be. 2016 was so unlucky that 2017 is already providing that solid balance of luck and good vibes in life. I'm using all of it as creative inspiration to write the most glorious chapter of this life yet. Thanks for the great memories already 2017. I think we're gonna be great friends...
