Frederick’s gaze hadn’t left Tobias since the countdown began. He’d never celebrated the coming of a new year like this, but he’d been enjoying it. The idea that they would be side by side at the end of one year and the start of another seemed magical to him. Santino had helped him realize that it was okay for him to be himself, and luckily it had led him to not needing to question anything when he was Tobi. Of course, he hadn’t kissed him yet. He was entirely inexperienced when it came to men, and he was counting down the seconds in his head so he could kiss Tobias and be confident about it.
Right as he counted down to one, someone caught his eye as they ran up to him. Santino. Before he had time to understand what was happening, he felt the other’s lips on his cheek, and a phrase that echoed in his head after Santino had already left. “Happy New Year, Charming.” He looked down at Tobi, who looked as surprised as Frederick felt. Before he had a chance to apologize, he was pulled into another surprise- Tobi’s lips on his. It was brazen and unexpected, and left Frederick feeling his heart skip more than just one beat.
“Happy New Year,” he smiled back happily, looking like a school child in the moment. Out of everyone that was around them in the room, the people that were cheering and running around kissing friends, his only focus was on Tobi, and the room was deafeningly silent. “You beat me to that,” he pouted, leaning down to tip Tobi’s chin up and kiss him gently again. “I’m sorry,” his hand fell away. “I had to. I suppose I should explain who that other person was.”
