"SURPRISING SAE âĄ"
synposis: you host a secret bday celeb for sae. â cw: nicknames , soft angst??, surprise birthday , etc!
â áááą happy birthday my dearest, sae !!
you tell sae itoshi you canât make it.
you practice the lie twice before saying it out loud, trying to make it sound casual â like it doesnât bother you to miss his birthday. like youâre not sitting cross-legged on the floor surrounded by tangled fairy lights and wrapping paper, your phone on speaker while saeâs voice hums through it, calm and distant as always.
âitâs fine,â sae says. and maybe it is, to him. saeâs never been big on birthdays. heâs the type who forgets his own until someone reminds him, the type who brushes off celebrations with a quiet âitâs just another day.â
but itâs not just another day. not to you.
youâve been planning this for weeks â not something huge, just something him. a small cake, clean candles, dim lights. the kind of stillness he likes. something that feels like home after a long day of pretending the world doesnât touch him.
so when he says, âitâs fine,â you smile into the phone and whisper, âhappy early birthday, sae.â and he only answers with a low âmm.â
you hang up and get to work. by the time evening comes, everythingâs ready. the cakeâs slightly uneven, but you tell yourself itâs fine. the lights flicker softly, warm and golden. the air smells like sugar and vanilla and maybe a little bit of hope.
you sit on the couch, fidgeting with the lighter, listening for the sound of his keys. and when the door finally clicks open â you freeze.
the lights are off, the apartment still. sae steps in, sighs quietly, his usual post-training silence filling the space. you can almost picture his expression: tired eyes, half-open shirt collar, hair slightly damp.
he shuts the door. kicks off his shoes.
he flicks the switch.
and everything bursts to life.
light spills across the room â soft orange hues bouncing off streamers and ribbons. the small cake on the table glows with tiny flames. and you, standing there, holding a single balloon you didnât know what to do with, smiling like your chest might burst.
âsurprise,â you say, a little breathless.
sae blinks once. twice. his hand stays frozen on the light switch.
âyou saidââ
âi lied,â you grin. âsorry. not really.â
he doesnât move for a moment, just looks at you, and for once you canât read him. thereâs something in his eyes â quiet, maybe even a little overwhelmed, but he hides it like he always does.
finally, he exhales. walks over. âyou didnât have to.â
âi wanted to.â
his gaze drifts across the room â the uneven decorations, the slightly melting cake, the note you left beside it that says âmake a wish, grumpy.â
and something in his face softens. so subtly you almost miss it.
he stops in front of you. close enough that you can feel the faint heat radiating from his skin. his eyes flicker to yours, then down to your lips, then back up again.
âyouâre ridiculous,â he says, voice quieter than usual.
âyou like it though.â
âmaybe.â
you laugh softly, and the sound seems to ease something in him. he leans in, forehead brushing yours, the smell of rain and cologne clinging to him.
âhappy birthday, sae,â you whisper.
for a second, he doesnât answer. then his lips press against yours â slow, careful, like heâs still learning how to say thank you without words.
when he pulls back, heâs smiling â barely, but itâs there.
ââŠyou made me a cake?â
âtechnically, i almost burned it,â you admit. âbut yeah.â
he hums again, softer this time. âitâs perfect.â
and just like that, the quiet fills the room again â not heavy, but warm. the kind that wraps around both of you and makes the world outside feel small.
you light the candles once more when the first ones melt too low, and he lets you feed him a bite that leaves frosting on his lip. you wipe it off with your thumb, laughing, and he catches your wrist before you can pull away â just holds it there for a moment.
âthank you,â he says finally.
and you realize, maybe thatâs what love looks like for sae itoshi â not grand gestures, not words shouted from rooftops, but a quiet moment in the glow of a small cake, your laughter against his shoulder, and the faint smile he only ever shows you.
