Firstly everything your gonna read is me theorizing, and every single thing in it is out if pure knowledge.
That i have access to Within my brain at the moment.
Which will involve yapping a lot.
And i don't know if what's gonna be said is already common knowledge, or something like that, but I'll drop it anyway.

Everything I'll talk about is past Act 4 from instars and time. Finish the act before reading...
And it contains stuff along the lines of Depression, so be warned

[MAL DU PAYS
theory start
Let me start by what i know and probably everyone else, about MalDupays. First the name mal Du Pays means "Home sickness" (told of by my cousin, @zezodacol ). They appear in act 4 after trying to beat the king alone. Draining Siffrin down, telling sif that after beating the king everyone will forget about him, like how everyone forgot about his country.
And mal du pays is a sadness... Or is It???
Now you may Go to say it is, but i have some yapping to do, so listen first.
Sadnesses are description by Odile is along the lines of "sadnesses are the sadness of people frozen by the king" or something like that. Which means, the king is needed for a sadness to exist, along side a frozen vessel.
While on the other hand, mal du pays existed without Siffrin being frozen in time... Except a dozen times before. And here where my theory starts.
My theory suggests that Mal du pays is the personification of sadnesses, of depression, of being slowly turned into a sadness.
With each loop Siffrin took the more desperate he comes, the more impatient they get, the more depressed they come.
With each one filling the bar of sadness slowly and slowly.... Until the max, but Siffrin didn't get frozen so there is no vessel.
So mal du pays stepped in, appearing to Siffrin as ghost clones, making Siffrin desperate even more, hoping he gets frozen forever.... But couldn't ... Until act 4.
Where Siffrin tried to kill the king alone, but failed, the king froze Siffrin... But enough to keep Siffrin's brain running, and so mal du pays did what it is best at and started manipulating Siffrin into depression.
"they'll forget you" they said. "Why didn't you die for me Siffrin!?" They said. "I never liked you" they said. "We'll keep him around for usefulness" they said.
And so on and forth... Siffrin was about to succumb to sadness. To mal du pays. To The home sickness!
Before his family arrived and helped him.
So what does this theory conclude?
The following:
Mal du pays is not a sadness. That Mal du pays IS the second cause of sadnesses. That mal du pays is the personification of sadness.
Which does mean one additional thing. Mal du pays may still be around, lurking, waiting for someone to be come so desperate, they can make another sadness.

been thinking about headcanons for how sadnesses work. they’re made out of solid craft, which can have a variety of physical properties, but is generally grouped into five categories of material. a sadness will be composed of several if not all of these materials, but each craft type has a material it tends towards a greater proportion of. this contributes to its type advantage and disadvantage.
hard craft - favored by scissors types - sharp but brittle. think bone or glass. it’s pointy and smooth and hard to get a grip on, but when it breaks it cracks and shatters. it tends to act as carapace or skeleton.
semi-hard craft - favored by rock types - strong but somewhat malleable. think metal. it can hit hard and it’s difficult to even scratch, but it’s easier to bend out of shape, and with enough bending you can break it. it tends to act as skeleton or limbs.
semi-soft craft - favored by paper types - flexible but soft. think rubber or fabric. it’s very maneuverable and can bend with a force and then back into place, but it’s easy to cut into. it tends to act as limbs or muscle.
soft craft - stretchy but weak. think dough. it’s easy to slice or pull or squish, but it bounces right back unless you tear it off entirely. it tends to act as muscle or skin.
liquid craft - adaptable but flimsy. think slime or honey. it’s hard to truly alter because it flows and reforms easily, but it can’t affect anything else very much either. it tends to act as clothes, hair, or tears.
a person can use their innate craft energy to absorb some of the impact of an attack, and the way it does so reflects their craft type. craft attacks and defenses aren’t made of a solid material the same way sadnesses are; they seem more like light or gas or electricity. but, they take on properties of solid matter when you interact with them, sort of like how oobleck seems liquid but then acts solid when you smack it. alternatively, craft can be channeled through a physical object and amplify its properties instead.

mine is called accablé which means overwhelmed/overburdened, bc i'm always totally fine for quite a while until one last straw tips me into total breakdown and then suddenly i can't stand any sort of noise or interaction. since stars are already taken as a motif i did diamonds instead. and i gave myself my platforms teehee.
my kid is frustrée because being five years old is very frustrating! people keep bossing you around and you're old enough to know why but that just makes it even worse, that you know they're right. i asked her what type she'd be and she said scissors, which seems appropriate that i'd be weak to her attacks, lol.
