Steve's eyes immediately shot open when he heard the panicked breathing beside him, bolting upright in the bed. His lover was trembling as he curled in on himself, shielding his face with his metal arm. The super soldier gingerly moved closer, fingers combing through Bucky's newly cut hair that looked like a slightly more modern version of the style he'd had in the war.
Bucky let out a soft grunt and laid down on his stomach, face pressed into Steve's lap as he nuzzled a little into his hand, silently demanding to be pet. Playing with his hair and slipping his hand under the man's shirt occasionally to massage the tense muscles, the blond hummed a soft song his mother would sing to him whenever he had nightmares.
Finishing the lullaby, the two sat in silence, only their breathing and the night life of New York disturbing the quiet. Bucky had shifted just a little closer until his nose was brushing Steve's abdomen, his human hand fisted in his boyfriend's shirt.
"Would you like to talk about it?" The man laying half on top of him shook his head slowly, sitting up and wrapping his arm's around the superhero's neck.
Gently, Steve laid back on the bed with his best friend on top of him and kept hands a comforting presence on his lower spine, kissing the top of his head and staying awake until he was sure Bucky was sound asleep before joining him as well.
