James hadnât been sure what was going to come out of Bartyâs mouth, but that certainly hadnât been on the list.Â
âEffieâs been helping me become sober. I go to meetings now,â he laughed coldly. âItâs all sunny outlooks and bright smiles, everyone.â He grimaced. âSo yeah, the cheating was all to get a hit. Iâd given Reg all the money I had for the flat and forgotten that I still needed money for my habit. I shagged Evan because I knew he loved me. Iâd always known, and he wasnât Reg. Reg made me feel guilty every time he touched me, but Evan was safe. I-I-I do love Reg, but he and I, we never should have been together; I see that now. Heâs sweet and vulnerable with all that sharpness mixed in; heâs beautiful, but so is Evan and Evan⊠Evan makes me feelââ He cut himself off. âDoesnât matter now,â he scoffed, pushing himself up from the sofa. âSo yeah, James. You donât have to worry about me going after Reg again; thatâs over for me.â Barty walked out of the room without looking back, trying to hold his shoulders high, but James could see the defeat there. He didnât want to get himself mixed up in their drama. Evan hadnât exactly told them how he felt about Barty, though it was obvious, and it wasnât his place to say anything, so why was his big mouth opening and words coming out?
âEvanâs heartbroken,â he said to Bartyâs retreating back. Barty stiffened, his shoulders drooping.Â
âYeah? Heâs better off without me,â and he carried on walking.Â
