The doorbell startled Aether.
Wiping the tears that had been coming without a break for the last few hours, he got up from the corner of the bedroom. The sudden movement made him stumble and his vision blurry, but he pushed through the dizziness and walked to the door.
Holding the knob and leaning his face towards the crack of the door, Aether opened his mouth, "W-who is it…?" His voice was weak, the sound of it strange to himself. He had spent the whole day unspeaking, after all.
An assertive voice responded from outside of the apartment, "It's me, Xiao. You called, didn't you?"
Aether widened his eyes hearing the response. He hurriedly opened the door, staring at the floor and making way for his friend to enter. "I'm sorry… I completely forgot…"
Xiao entered the place, watching Aether's back as he locked the door again. "How come you forgot? I came as fast as I could…" His words came to a halt when Aether finally faced him.
Xiao stared at the other's golden pupils, dumbfounded at his appearance. Aether's face was swollen, cheeks red while his disheveled yellow hair fell wildly on the large hoodie he wore. "What's wrong?!" Xiao softly grabbed the blonde's shoulders, guiding the both of them to the sofa to sit down. He worried that Aether would fall to the floor at any moment.
"I… I'm not sure… It feels like too much. Everything feels like too much," Trying to compose himself, Aether said with a shaky voice, "Can you stay? Just for tonight, please…"
"Yes, of course. You don't have to ask me…" Xiao reassured him. He hugged Aether for a few minutes while he cried on his chest.
After what felt like enough, Xiao scanned the apartment and carefully pushed Aether to the sofa as he stood up, "Hey… Can you wait a moment?"
Receiving a slow nod from Aether, Xiao walked through the place like it was his own, familiar with every room because of his past visits. Once he gathered everything he wanted, Xiao returned to the sofa.
Aether had his hands on his face, trying to hide the sorrowful feelings his expression portrayed while dampening his sleeves. But the clicking of glass against glass made Aether peek at the situation.
A large cup of water was settled on the coffee table before him. Xiao held a blanket over his shoulder, signaling Aether to lay down on the couch. After spreading the blanket over him, Xiao grabbed one of the chairs and sat next to Aether's face.
"...I'm sorry you had to come over on such short notice," Aether cried, "But…"
"Don't apologize, I came because I wanted to." Xiao cut him off, but soon his expression softened as he realized that might have come off as too harsh, "You can tell me anything, Aether. Please, tell me what's wrong."
With great effort, Aether gave him a woeful smile. More tears formed in his eyes as he started explaining.
