Footsteps echo down the staircase, and Adelaide jerks awake from her half-asleep state, chains rattling around her wrists and ankles. She watches the doorway warily. It’s been ages since she’s seen anyone else, a few days at her best guess, and she hopes that whoever is coming now is bringing her at least some water, if not also a bit of food. Maybe it’ll be Marshall. She could certainly use a friendly face right about now.

Instead, the two figures that appear are strangers to her. Adelaide shifts, trying to straighten, but pain grips her back and she freezes, teeth gritted as she tries not let out a cry.

The stranger with the long braids approaches first, leaning against the bars of the cell to peer inside, dark eyes evaluating her. “What do we have here?”

Adelaide swallows hard. She’d heard a commotion up top recently, and assumed that The Dark Storm had overtaken another vessel. But if they’d been the ones doing the attacking, then how are these two now onboard, acting as if they belong here?

“Wh-who are you?” Her voice cracks, throat so, incredibly dry, but she stares them down and pretends it didn’t.

The stranger gives a wry smile. “You can call me Captain Vee, and this is Miss Sable.”

“We could ask you the same thing.” The woman with curly brown hair steps in closer, eyes on the ring of keys in her hand. “Are you a member of Payne’s crew? Because we’ve already dealt with the rest.”

Adelaide’s heart skips a beat. These people…actually won against Captain Payne? What had they done to the rest of the crew? To Marshall? What are they going to do to *her*?

“I…yes.” No use in trying to lie. “I am, unfortunately. Not by my choice, though.”

Captain Vee hums in thought. “Is that why they’ve got you locked up down here?”

Glancing back and forth between them, Adelaide tries to look proud, despite the fact that her shirt is dried to the lashes on her back, and her wrists are weighed down with irons, and her stomach is so empty that it aches. “He locked me up because I refuse to bow to his every whim.”

Captain Vee laughs aloud at that, and there’s a glimmer of amusement in Sable’s eyes, as well. She’s selected a key now, and without further instruction uses it to unlock the cell door, swinging it open wide. As she crosses to Adelaide she flips through the ring again, finding a smaller key and crouching down to release the manacles from her wrists and ankles.

“She’s going to need medical attention.” Her face is kind, and Adelaide feels herself relaxing despite her ongoing bewilderment at this turn of events.

“She’ll get it,” the Captain replies. “What should we call you?”

“Adelaide,” she breathes. “My name is Adelaide Gray.”

eep! thank you Sable!! A little Victorian whump for your trouble?

"Good morning, Miss Marshall."

Esme closed the book and turned her face up, coming face-to-face with Jasper Easom. He was not as he had left her the night before. His face was bloody, bruised about the eyes and jaw. Her mouth dropped open as she took in his pulped features, then banished the shock to scowl openly at the man. "You didn't listen to me, did you?"

Jasper shrugged inside his great coat. "Something like that."

My first memory of you is me joining WG and feeling overwhelmed so I asked if anyone wanted to talk to me because I didn't know anyone and new groups are confusing and you said you understood how that feels and then you and a whole lot of people were so sweet to me!
