For real, I'm all for a same sex couple on The Nevers, and with Philippa set to take over I could see gay characters being handled very well (she has won a GLAAD award), but I really don't think there's anything between Penance and Amalia. Sorry. It's not erotic or sub textual. If this was the same dynamic but with a man and a woman and they told us they were like brother and sister, I don't think tumblr would be getting so tumblr about it🙄
Maybe down the line I'll change my mind but for now I going with what the show and actresses tell us: they're like sisters.
For real though I would love it if more posts would focus on them as characters, individually. Instead they are only boiled down to a, for now, headcannoned romance. Fantasize about whatever storyline you want but don't shame people for liking the Penance and Augie set up (i.e. tagging penance x augie or penaugie with your negative posts--people searching those tags don't want to see your hate) or think the only point of the show is "Penance and Amalia's lovestory" because the show isn't a love story as far as I can tell and you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you don't get what you want.
