The twelfth Doctor’s story was a story about looking for his identity. It was a long and very difficult road; full of insecurity, self-loathing. From a man who almost didn’t care who was going to die to the last man standing on a battlefield, defending those in need, because it’s decent, right, and, most of all, kind. Those are, without a doubt, actions of a good man. In the end, he found what he was looking for. He found the Doctor in himself.
But he is about to lose it again and start from the beginning. And again, he has the most important promise to live up to. Given these circumstances, one can hardly blame him for not wanting to go.
Don't bother trying to regenerate, you got the full blast. Never again! I can't keep on being somebody else!
