(A lot of this discussion will be slightly disjointed-- in the Haunted AU, Francis doesn't arrive until season 4.)
This clip is a wonderful little snapshot into the Haunted AU's themes and ideas, pertaining to Hawkeye's magic and Francis's faith. Feeling like you're never quite doing enough, because enough doesn't exist -- the idea of making someone Whole again doesn't really happen, and it certainly doesn't happen overnight. Even raising someone from the dead is a rough road.
Add on top of that the fact that Francis can't see when he's truly Saved someone, because by definition such a thing cannot be seen in our lifetime. He's come to this camp, his first chaplaincy posting, and he's faced with a chief surgeon who uses dark magic for undeniably good purposes. It's not a crisis of faith, per se, but he's certainly not as comfortable as he used to be.
"I'm able to do a lot of things in surgery that I'm not really good enough to do." As of season 1, Hawkeye is still very new to human resurrection, and he's not quite sure what he can and can't do with it. So, essentially this conversation feels like two people saying different words but ultimately the same thing -- "I don't know exactly what I'm doing but I've gotta do it."
