I chose the initial "S" because that is the first letter of the name I am currently deciding on being called.

My username, basement, was actually something that I randomly thought of one night when creating this account.

i think the pacing and tension was something i worked very hard on and put a lot of thought into—a thread pulled soooo tight until it snaps and recoils. so i’m so glad that’s being appreciated!!!!!

characterization is something i struggle with when i read fics so i wanted it to feel as real and true and authentic as possible (to my own interpretation, of course, but it’s something i’ve received lots of comments about and i’m so glad it’s working for other people too tehe)

i really didn’t even intend for summer skin to be big on the catholic guilt lol… my previous two fics are very centralized on that and summer skin was intended to be more lighthearted and fun and ridiculous and yet somehow we ended up here LOL. rhe catholicism really just crept up on me in the process as it tends to do. fun summer skin fact for you—this was originally supposed to be entirely mack pov. but i am simply sooo enamored by mr william smith hockey and i couldn’t resist getting his freak brain in the mix. and then as soon as he was forced to reckon with his queerness in the narrative, even indirectly, the god of it all just… snuck in, just how it happens when i myself am in specific situations where i am forced to contend with my own queerness or potential moral failings. (obviously not saying that queerness is a moral failing—i love being queer. but growing out of how you were raised is like growing out of your own skin. god is melded to me, as he is to will.)

“surely if there was a god he would exist in the way we love each other” is soooo true and important and real and genuinely like the whole schtick i was going for once i committed to will’s religious upbringing being a central theme of the fic. to love another person IS to see the face of god and every act of love IS an act of god and sometimes the church becomes too small for us and we simply have no choice but to find god nearly everywhere else, because that’s what we were raised on, but also because it becomes a choice. i don’t know if i believe in god anymore, but if he is there—i have been finding flickers of him in my friends and sunsets and fresh fruit and the first snow of the season and constellations and the pages of a book and my sisters’ eyes and my mother’s smile and the scarlet juice staining my own fingers when i’m getting out all the pomegranate seeds for myself. but i digress. getting to explore these themes and having so much room (read: word count) to work with in this fic was very interesting and stimulating and also very cathartic for me. many tears were shed, by myself and g (whose patience and grace and invaluable contributions helped make this fic what it is—i love her so dearly and i am truly sorry for what i put her through but i will be doing it again).

anyway—god. i still have a lot of questions there i may never find answers to. at the end of the fic will is in the same boat—a weird in-between state of acceptance that is still contending with fear and awe and wonder. he loves mack—maybe the one thing in the world he does know for certain. and everything else will just… keep being there.

per your final point, i genuinely have sooo many thoughts swirling in this kaleidoscope of a brain about the bc line, most of which will never see the light of day simply due to the sheer volume of them. i liked the exploration of their dynamic i have been doing in summer skin (and pushing it down and praying) and it’s something i plan to hopefully pick at more in whatever i write in the future.
