Bradley Surgener of Hanamaki City (originally from the USA) Bradley spent a year in Hirono on the coast of Iwate teaching English on the JET Programme, and then spent a year in Hanamaki working at the Meinn guesthouse to support the foreign guests that would stay there.
“There’s definitely a lot of interesting things that don’t get shown about this area - about Tohoku in general, but specifically Iwate. It’s pretty easy to get here, and it’s a lot easier to get around here than you would expect. A guest was commenting last night that she was surprised how big Hanamaki was. And Morioka as well. I had a friend I took to Morioka and we walked around the station to get to that gorgeous view of the mountain, and I realized, this is a really big city. A big place. I think people imagine Iwate to be smaller, because it’s so far away. But it’s big and there’s a lot to do. There’s things about Iwate that are just not publicized, but people are interested when they find out. I had a friend doing deep research and found the Ryusendo Cave, and said this looks amazing! But she wouldn’t have known without some deep research. And with Hanamaki, this place has some of the best hot springs in Japan that I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a lot. The down town area is very pretty. You’ve got these awesome things that need to be shown to people. It’s worth a stop! And to be honest had I not been placed here on the JET program I wouldn’t have known about these things.” Learn more!
