Born in Skelleftehamn, Sweden, Stieg Larsson earned worldwide acclaim for his Millennium Trilogy, which includes the novels The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original title: Män som hatar kvinnor), The Girl Who Played with Fire (original title: Flickan som lekte med elden), and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (original title: Luftslottet som sprängdes).

Known to most readers as Stieg Larsson, the popular Swedish novelist’s full name is Karl Stig-Erland Larsson. Stieg Larsson changed his name from “Stig,” the traditional spelling, to “Stieg,” in order to differentiate himself from friend and fellow writer Stig Larsson, who rose to fame before Steig. At the beginning of his fiction-writing career, Stieg Larsson gravitated toward science fiction rather than the crime and mystery genres that eventually made him famous. In the early 1970s, Larsson co-edited the science-fiction fanzine Sfären, along with Rune Forsgren. Throughout the decade, Larsson published approximately 30 fanzine issues, as well as several short stories, and he served as President of Sweden’s largest science-fiction fan club, Skandinavisk Förening för Science Fiction (SFSF), from 1978 to 1979.

In addition to his active participation in the Swedish science-fiction community, Stieg Larsson participated in Swedish political life. A political activist for the Kommunistiska Arbetareförbundet (Communist Workers League), Larsson traveled to Eritrea in 1977 to train female Eritrean People's Liberation Front guerrillas in the operation of grenade launchers. A vehement and lifelong enemy of extremist right-wing and racist organizations in Sweden, Larsson established the Swedish Expo Foundation in order to gather support from likeminded individuals and consolidate the resistance to the far Swedish right. In 1995, Larsson became the editor of the Swedish Expo Foundation’s magazine, Expo.
