The thing with Secret Service agents, if the films were to be believed, was that they had a tendency to go rogue. A person so devoted to their country they were willing to forgo family, friends, even their life for it could quickly turn into a person willing to defy their superiors in defence of what they believed to be their countryâs soul. Nikolai wasnât exactly sure why Ashton Ryder had been arrested, or even why heâd been the one contacted, but the curt explanation of insubordination meant it was probably for a very noble, very stupid cause.
Honestly, heâd been intending to let it lie, not wanting to get any more tangled up with US Intelligence than he absolutely had to. But -- Ashton had grown on him, somehow. He was useful, yes, but he was also getting dangerously close to being someone Nikolai would consider a friend.
Aside from all that, it was always good to have someone in your debt. So arrangements had been made, a âwindow cleaningâ van loitering outside the jail, a little something slipped in to Ashton through a friendly guard. All that was left was one phone call.Â
Somehow, it rung through; if this worked, Nikolai was never going to let Ash live down the amount of wheedling heâd had to do to convince the police. âMr. Ryder.â He was grinning even though the other wasnât there to see it, back into the familiar groove of work. âAt 2pm today, your prison is going to suffer a power cut. Hopefully you can make use of your new toys--â A set of lockpicks and a small handgun âAnd get out. Oh, and if you say one word about this being what you deserve, I will personally come and drag you out of there. Good luck.â
