Never forget that a bonus song on the hsm soundtrack had Ryan and his evil twin sister singing a verse that was CLEARLY meant for a couple. Or that in season two of hsmtmts the in universe production cast cousins in the role of Belle and Gaston.
The way that duet wasn't even in the top 10 most questionable Ryan and Sharpay moments XD
I stared at the screen for a solid minute trying to figure out the fuck hsmtmts stood for. I COMPLETELY forgot that series was a thing, and that's despite me being a casual Olivia Rodrigo fan.
It just slides off my brain because I was no longer watching the Disney Channel by then, so for me the High School Musical franchise ended with the third movie.

i know that sharpay only had herself to blame for ryan pulling away from her and that it’s ultimately a very good thing that ryan befriends the wildcats, but the “when did you become one of them?” line always breaks my heart.
like, they have probably been inseparable since birth, it’s always been them against the world, them against those pesky wildcats who tried to steal their spotlight. it’s always been us vs them for the twins and then suddenly ryan becomes one of them are sharpay is left all alone. and again, i know this is a consequence of her own actions, but that must be a horrible feeling.
Ryan and Sharpay had been inseparable from the day they were born. Only college could keep them a part, but even during those years they skyped every day and kept each other updated on everything that happened in their lives. Now, living together once more, it was like they had never spent four years apart. “I don’t understand what the big deal is. Everyone knows the Jazz Square is my signature move. Shar, I used it in every performance I did at Julliard and never received anything but the highest marks. But now I’m being told it’s outdated? They want me to cut it from the show completely, like, who do they think they are?”
Ryan and Sharpay (platonic, obviously) "He's dead"
(send me a prompt!)
12. “He’s dead.”
It’s strange to be back in his childhoodhome, in his childhood room.
Pursing his lips, Ryan nods as he glancesaround the room. Nothing has changed since he left for New York all these yearsago, yet everything has.
A certain heaviness hangs in the air, butas he looks around at the room he used to dance around in, he feels a littleinkling of how happy and carefree he had felt during the countless days he hadspent here. It doesn’t compare to the freedom he has experienced since he left, but it still leaves a smile on his face.
The smile, however, disappears as henotices a framed picture on the nightstand. He briefly wonders how that isstill here in Albuquerque. It’s one of his favourite pictures, taken during atrip to Paris the Evans family had taken when he and Sharpay were twelve. Of course it hadbeen a poor make-up gift for their parents’ constant absence, but Ryan lovedevery second of it.
He loses himself in memories of the EiffelTower and croissants until he hears the clicking of heels in the hallway. Whenthe sound stops, he places the picture back on the nightstand and turns aroundto find his sister standing in front of him.
They just stare at each other for a minute, quietly communicating their concern for one another in a way only they canwhile Peyton and Ben’s faint voices downstairs fill the silence.
“Hi,” Ryan simply says after a while andSharpay just nods in acknowledgement and averts her eyes, her gaze falling onthe same picture he was holding before.
She takes a step towards the nightstand, taking the picture in her hands and staring at it thoughtfully.
“Huh.”
Ryan notices the quiver of her lips as shesets the frame down and drops down on the bed dramatically. He can’t count thetimes she has done that, because of her own trouble or because she knewsomething was up with him. It almost makes him smile, but he refrains, for heknows why she’s doing it and he knows that this problem is bigger than anythingthey’ve ever faced.
Sharpay sniffs and folds her hands in herlap as she stares up at him desperately.
“He’s dead.”
Her voice is barely above a whisper, butthe emotion in it makes a lump form in his throat and it’s not until then thathe notices how distraught she looks, her skin pale and her eyes blood-shot andadorned with mascara streaks. The last time he’s seen her like this was beforethe Midsummer Talent Show the summer between junior and senior year and whilehe mainly has fond memories of that summer, other memories from that same time now hurt more than ever.
As he sits down next to her and fiddles with his hands helplessly,he thinks that he must look just as distraught.
“Yeah.”
They both stare at the picture for aminute, before Sharpay lets out a frustrated sigh.
“I don’t know how to feel, Ryan,” sheadmits, slightly desperately, “I just don’t. I mean, he was our father, but hewas also kind of–”
“Crappy?” Ryan finishes and Sharpayscrunches up her nose and nods.
“To say the least,” she affirms bitterly asshe stares down at the bracelet adorning her left wrist. Ryan knows shereceived it for their twenty-first birthday, the same birthday he got thewatch that is on his own wrist.
“I mean, this sounds rich coming from me,but affection can’t be bought,” she states, “If being a mother has taught meanything, it’s that.”
Ryan laughs as he shoots Sharpay an amusedlook and nudges her with his elbow, “Wow, that does sound rich coming fromyou.”
Sharpay rolls her eyes and punches hisshoulder with a weak giggle. She smiles sadly as her eyes meet Ryan’s, “I wishthings would be different.”
Ryan stays silent as he contemplates herwords. It’s true, he thinks. There are so many things that their parents didwrong and there are so many things to make up for, but if they had more time,he has no doubts that they had been able to fix things. But now there is notime left and there’s nothing he can do to make everything okay.
Sharpay breaks the silence by sighingagain, “I’m going to miss him, though.”
A tear rolls down her face and Ryan feelshis own lip tremble as he takes her hand in his and squeezes it comfortingly. She smiles through the tears, which are now flowing freely, accompanied byloud, dramatic sobs, and squeezes back.
“Oh, Ryan,” she sobs as Ryan starts crying, too, and she throws her arms around him, holding him tightly as she bawlsagainst his shoulder.
It feels like an eternity before they’veboth regained their composure and are sitting upright again, Sharpay’s headstill leaning against Ryan’s shoulder and their hands still intertwined as theystare off into space, the same way they always used to do when they felt lonelyand sad and just needed each other.
“I miss this,” Sharpay says quietly andRyan squeezes her hand to indicate that he feels the same. The air in the roomstill feels heavy, but with his sister by his side, he doesn’t feel as weigheddown anymore.
Until the silence is disrupted by ahigh-pitched scream that is most likely Sabrina’s coming from downstairs.
“We should probably go downstairs,” Ryanstates and Sharpay groans and snuggles further into his shoulder.
“I don’t want to,” she says stubbornly,“Can’t we just stay here forever and pretend everything’s okay?”
“Hey, hey,” Ryan says as he grabs her faceand makes her lock eyes with him, “It will be okay. It may take time, but itwill.”
He doesn’t know whether he believes whathe’s saying, but they seem to have convinced Sharpay. She sighs and rolls hereyes, but nods regardless before they stand up. However, when Ryan starts tomove, he doesn’t hear the clicking of her heels.
“Ry?”
He hears her voice, small andvulnerable, behind him and as he turns around, she flies into his arms and embraces him tightly.
“I love you,” she murmurs into his neck, her voice breaking, and he squeezes a little tighter.
“I love you, too, sis,” he says and hefeels her smile before she lets go with a sigh and ruffles his hair affectionatelybefore making her way out of the room.
And as he follows her downstairs, Ryan knowsthat he does believe in the words he uttered before. As long as he has hissister, everything will be okay.

It's weird how no one seems to stand up for Ryan to Sharpay or call her out on her honestly bad relationship the two have. Do you think it started in childhood and that she grows out it out from college to appreciate her brother
I honestly don’t think their relationship is bad, necessarily? Yes, there’s a strain on their relationship in HSM2 and 3 and Ryan has every right to be annoyed with Sharpay, but I think they love each other and will always be each other’s best friend in spite of all of that. They’re a package deal, an unstoppable force. After all, “we’re twins, they’re gonna have to take us both.”
That being said, we do see Gabriella stand up for Ryan in HSM2, of course, but I don’t think it’s necessarily weird that no one did before that. Neither Evans twins have many friends before Ryan becomes part of the Wildcats gang and the friends they do have (the Sharpettes and to a lesser extent, Kelsi) are all too intimidated by Sharpay to really stand up to her. It’s only when Gabriella starts seeing there’s more to Ryan than meets the eye, that Ryan gets new friends and of course it’s Gabriella, with her incredibly strong (maybe too strong?) moral compass, who stands up for him.
As for how it started, yes, it started in childhood, I think, and it just was the way it was for a long time, because Sharpay has a very loud, dominant personality and Ryan is much more mellow and quiet. I also don’t necessarily think she doesn’t appreciate him, but I think she’s just... too caught up in her own world to see that he has other needs and to properly acknowledge how much she loves him (and I truly think she does; I could make another post about her side of the conflict between them, really) and I think that Ryan was genuinely fine with being the less dominant one until that faithful summer between junior and senior year, when Sharpay really underappreciated him.
I also think that Sharpay does learn to show her appreciation for Ryan after high school. She goes through so much character development in SFA and she learns to not be as selfish, so I think she can definitely extend her new knowledge and life lessons to her relationship with her brother (and Ryan’s cameo and how happy they both are really does show how good their relationship is at the end of SFA!). Also, I think a little distance will definitely do them good, anyway.
