District Four. The reaping.
She woke up to her mother walking in, pulling open the curtains and allowing the light to flood through. Theyâd never had a particularly close relationship, it was her motherâs idea for her to spend time at the training centre, to practise at any opportunity available⌠âYou never know, you might want to volunteer one day.â Sheâd told her, before sending her off into the daunting building. The words them-self had created a rift between them. âBig day today, River. Make sure you look presentable.â The words echoed in the air, and when there wasnât a response, her mother made sure to walk over and pull the pillow from under Riverâs head. âOkay! Iâm up, I.am.up.â She replied, lifting her hands up in defence. Her expression dropped when she released exactly what the big day was⌠The reaping. She hated it, watching people run at the opportunity to be killed, all because they ought they were being brave, honourable⌠When really, it was just the murder of twenty three children. Slaughter. Her mother gave a slight tut, before walking out, leaving her daughter to it. River pulled on a simple, pale blue dress, twisting her hair up into a ponytail and pushing a small pin that caught the light into it, once ready, she went into Mayaâs room, almost falling over when her little sister ran into her legs. âWhere are you going, Wiv?â She asked with curious eyes. Her heart plummeted into her chest, how was she supposed to tell her five year old sister about where their country did? She couldnât. âOh⌠Iâm just going to go to the beach, my little mermaid, I might be a while though, so donât wait up, love you.â She tapped her on the nose, getting a small giggle in return, before leaving the room. She was just about to leave for the justice building, when she felt a strong, reassuring hand on her shoulders. âLeaving with out saying goodbye?â Her dad chuckled, though the smile didnât reach his eyes. He put his free hand on her other shoulder. âI know I say this every year love, but donât volunteer, you donât need to⌠No money or fame is worth that.â She gave a slight bow of her head, kissing his cheek. âIâll see you later, okay?â She told him, before leaving the house and walking to the square.
After getting her finger pricked, she went to the seventeen year old sections eyes scanning the crowds for Creston. She hoped to god he wouldnât volunteer, heâd said he wouldnât, so she just hoped he stuck to that. There was a Capitol cough, if that were even possible, followed by the âclick click click expensive heels. âWelcome welcome to the 65th annual hunger gamesâŚâ The voice of Xania chimed out, causing River to automatically zone out as the anthem and the video of the dark days started to show. She loved history yes, wondering what it was like before Panem, before the games and Snow, but not this type of history, it was a joke. âNow, time to select one courageous young man and women⌠ladies first!â Rivers attention was caught as acrylic nails delved into the cream slips. âAnd our female tribute from District four for is⌠River Porter!â Her heart thumped into her ribs, that was her name⌠And nobody was volunteering. She gulped, balling up her shaky hands and forcing a smile onto her face. She wouldnât let them know theyâd scared her, not a chance. With her head lifted high, she walked onto the stage.
