Needy baby convinced we only come in after hours to see him and him alone
Nevermind my HGE dog. Only him.
One thing that I dont find a lot of people talk about when going into vet med is the whole 'knowledge is a curse' phenomenon. You will never be able to react normally to your animals acting out of the ordinary ever again. The thought "its probably nothing to worry about" is drowned out by your brain listing off every possible differential from worse to worst.
Libby has been acting off since this morning. Very lethargic but will go for a walk if encouraged. Still eating, but only if under the threat that Ace may try to eat her food if she doesn't get it first. No vomiting or diarrhea that I have seen. Seems uncomfortable in the abdomen but not splinting or groaning when palpated.
My anxiety is through the fucking roof.
I am trying to think through this logically, as if it was another patient. Lethargic but still eating, no v/d, should probably be seen in the next day or so if no improvement with a bland diet and fortiflora.
My tech brain, however, is short circuiting. I just keep thinking back to Black and spiralling. What if its cancer? What if its a splenic mass? What if its a diabetic crisis? What if I wait too long and she suffers like Black did? What if I bring her in on emergency and its nothing and I'm overreacting? What if I dont?
Nobody warns you about this in school. You know all of the things it COULD BE. Some days I wish I didnt know, and I could just look at my dog and go 'oh her stomach must be upset. I'll call the vet tomorrow.' I wish I could relax. You know what it could be, so your brain tries to convince you of the worst case scenario because that is how our brains are wired. I'm sitting here freaking out because it might be cancer. It might be cushings. It might be pancreatitis. It might be a foreign body.
Or it might just be an upset tummy.
The saying ignorance is bliss? Absolutely fucking true.
I disliked the two Friede episodes.
I'd like to make it clear that this is not a Friede hate post. What I am truly frustrated at is the narrative decisions that warped his character into something unlikeable to me. He had a lot of potential on this arc, but it got thrown away.
Ranting under the line, you have been warned.
guys I did something so gross in anatomy today that i actually think I'll never recover and honestly it might have gotten me over my emetophobia bc ppl were gagging and I was like yeah that's the only rational response here

Real talk: Veterinary Technicians/Technologists and those Registered/Certified/Licensed within their regulatory body ARE NOT BEING ACTIVELY TRAINED ON THE JOB the way we were all taught and promised.
It's so hard to find a real clinic that mentors and doesn't just throw you in with vague excuses of poor planning leading to no training time only for you to fail in anxiety because lack of confidence is all it takes for a good VT to step back and say I'd like a secondary, another hand, to trade off with someone more comfortable.
So much attention is placed on Vets that little to no time is taken for VTs and I don't mean in training, I mean in everything - Vets are who the client knows and asks for, Vets are the final call makers on a lot of things, Vets are often looked to as teachers and knowledge keepers WHETHER OR NOT THEY'RE GOOD in theory or practice.
The divide I often get is
Management: ' We're focusing on onboarding, bulking staff, and rotating shifts to see who works best together'
The team: Getting shuffled around against their whim to find the best ratio of newbies to experienced VTs in order to limit the absolute minimum we have to train at all
I will literally make a whole series in this but agshfkskagsjdkagajdldhaskd frustration, what is this reality why is nothing as good as it ever gets to seem
