Bronislav Malakhovsky (1902-1937), 'Белка В Колесе' (Squirrel in A Wheel) ''Смехач'', #47, 1928
Malakhosky was arrested and murdered by Stalin's secret police (NKVD) during Stalin's "Great Terror" (or "Great Purge"). He was just one of about 740,000 people who were executed in 16 months between 1937 and 1938. While author of a popular children’s comic strip “Umnaya Masha", it was probably Malakhosky's political satire that made him a target, something authoritarian regimes have little tolerance for. This also gives me an excuse to link to the song, 'Beneath the Wheel' by D.R.I. from the 1989 album 'Thrash Zone', a record that was a staple of my freshman year in high school.

After some digging to find the artist, I discovered this is yet another interpretation of Sergey Razumovsky from the Russian comic Major Thunder / Plague Doctor.
But there’s just so much more to it that I can’t help but blink twice. Firstly, the birch trees have eyes... his pupils are on fire... and the tufts of bright lavender crown complement the waves of hair so brilliantly, you can’t help but feel you’ve intruded on some long-forgotten Fenno-Scandi ritual.
This is a face that treads borders, cultures and worlds.
