The Running Dead (A.k.a. Dead Season) (2012)
Two survivors of the zombie apocalypse arrive on an island where a small group have been holding out.
The location was one of the few passable things about this film that actually worked in its favour. The beach and island were good because it grounded the sense of isolation and contributed to the mental states of the survivors. The forest was also effective because it prevented a clear line of sight and made it a more believable threat when they were attacked through the trees.
The quality of the production was poor because the audio wasnât very clear and the directing looked as though it was copying shots from television in any order whether they worked together or not. The acting really didnât make up for the technical quality either, it made all of the characters difficult to care about and left the overall pace of the film very slow. There is a suggestion that every other animal and edible plant has been contaminated or died which makes the characters move onto cannibalism pretty fast but itâs not clear why things died and they donât seem to even attempt to fish even though theyâre on an island, not to mention that theyâll die without a varied diet anyway.
The film could be based on or have connections to The Walking Dead (2010-Present) but it doesnât work as a parody because itâs so depressing and doesnât create any meta-textual satire. It is however quite an achievement to make a zombie film uninteresting because the basics of making it at least half decent are so simple.
There are clearly some attempts to create dramatic scenes like the shooting of the child near the beginning but since there is little introduction to the characters or reasons to like them, it has little impact. As the movie progresses more and more people get bitten and there are several example where it looks like they let themselves get bitten rather than it being accidental, some even seem to thrust their hands or arms into the zombiesâ mouths.
2/10 -Itâs not THE worst, thatâs something else. But...-
-The zombie that attacks Elvis in the restaurant is the composer for the film.
-The vending machine scene originally ran for 7 minutes.
-The creators intended to remove all the animal noises from the island in post-production but this proved to be too expensive and time consuming.
