5 Unusual Gifts Runners Will Love
If you’re shopping for a runner this holiday season you might not know what to get someone who has, well, everything. Our advice: Think outside the running store.
Kettlebells: Runners often lament the need for greater strength and more time to strength-train. Kettlebells provide easy access to a quick total-body workout without the need for a trip to the gym, or even creating a full home gym. Available at sports/fitness gear stores; starting at $20
A Really Good Blender: A sophisticated appliance like a Vitamix is so powerful and versatile that calling it a "blender" doesn’t seem fair. Sure, it can tackle the protein shake, but it can also make peanut butter (and we know that runners love peanut butter). All those vegetables you know you should be eating? A device like this can easily turn them into juice, or puree produce into a smooth, creamy soup or dip. The recipe book alone justifies the price, in my opinion (my vote: the Thai Eye Opener). Available online or at stores such Costco or Williams-Sonoma; starting at $449.
Beer: One beverage many runners love — and one of the few that doesn’t come out of a blender — is beer. Some breweries recognize this special fan base and name their lagers accordingly, like the 200-Meter Ale, brewed by Rogue. Another running-themed brew to try is Brau Brothers’ Hundred Yard Dash Ale. Prices vary.
Sports Pedicure: Many salons now offer pedicures designed for athletes, which generally means going easy on callouses (after all, we’ve spent many miles building them up and want them right where we need them for protection against blisters), keeping nails on the short side, and extra time spent on massage. Ask at your local nail salon; starting at approximately $45
Rundies: No, you don’t wear underwear when you run. Or, at least, you don't need to (that's why there are liners inside running shorts). But every woman needs new underwear eventually and these Rundies, made by Oiselle, will delight the runner who wants to showcase the days of the week, running-style: fartlek, tempo, long run -- you get the idea. Genius. $65
