30 Day Running Challenge! Day 17
How many miles (I'm switching this to km cuz I'm Canadian yo!) a week are you usually running and what’s your normal pace? How would you like to improve this?
Well, currently, because of my injury, I'm only doing about 12-15K/week and I am instructing a clinic of beginner runners so our pace averages around 7:45/km.
2 or 3 month ago before injury got the best of me I was training for a half marathon, running about 35k/week at an average of about 6:30/k pace. I can't wait to get back to that. I feel like it's so far away right now. Injury sucks.
30 Day Running Challenge
Where do you run: treadmill, street, track, trail? And why do you prefer running there?
I run on the street and on the trails. I hate to offend anybody but I effing hate tracks and treadmills THEY'RE SO BORING. I love the street because I love looking at houses while I run. It's the best I can do in the city where I live. I like running on the trails because nature is beautiful and can't be outdone. It's also nice on the joints once in a while. The mountains are my absolute favourite place to run but that's not in the cards for me right now.Â
What kind of clothes do you run in? Actual running clothes or old t-shirts? Show us a picture!
I run in actual running clothes. I work at a running store so I have pretty easy access. Ain't nothing wrong with running in old t-shirts but once you're used to the beautiful wicking material of running clothing it's pretty hard to go back to cotton. I made my friend buy real running socks the other day (he was wearing cotton socks in 35 degree humidity...) and I'm pretty sure his life has changed. Running clothes are nice. But if all I've got is an old t-shirt then I'll run in an old t-shirt.Â
30 Day Running Challenge
What’s the strangest or most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you on a run?
Well I don't really have any... I feel like I should after so long.Â
I guess once I ran in the ravine (forest with a river in the middle) with my aunt and I was quite far ahead and this super creepy guy passed me. Freaked me out because sometimes there are some real characters hanging out in the ravine. Anyways I was too scared to go back so I just waited for my aunt for like 15 min and she didn't show up (she was like... 3 minutes behind me) and I actually thought something had happened. Turns out she'd turned around because she thought I'd gone back a different way. That was the SCARIEST thing that's ever happened to me. I guess strangest as well.Â
30 Day Running Challenge
I realize missing a few days makes a 30 day challenge pointless. But I promise it's for good reason. Anywho.
Who supports you the most with your running goals and why do you pick them?
My dad definitely supports me the most since we've been running together all this time. My mum does too though, as much as my dad. She's just not there during the training. I have the best parents.Â
Up until now my goals have been the obvious (for me) next step. I did a 5K, a 10K that summer, a half marathon the next summer and now I'm training a full marathon. I've run two (three?) 5K's, more 10's than I can keep track of and three half marathons. After I finish my full I plan on training for a faster half marathon and will hopefully break two hours.Â

30 Day Running Challenge
Day 6: To you, what’s the hardest thing about running?
Getting my running gear on. Seriously. Usually, once I have my gear on I can get out the door (though sometimes that's hard too, especially when I'm running alone). I really don't enjoy running alone. 5k can feel like a struggle but with a group I can go for hours.Â
But still, even after three years getting my gear on is probably the toughest. Mentally. Physically, I do ok.Â
30 Day Running Challenge
5. What’s your favorite distance to run or race and why?
This is ever changing. Until recently it was 15/16K (10 miles) because IÂ can still go fast but I don't have to go as fast as you I know I can in a 10K. In my halfs I kind of peak around 16 k and then everything starts to fall to pieces. But now that I've been training for a full and running much longer distances the 16 k peak is starting to disappear. So perhaps my new favourite distance is 21.1 (13.1). You get to see a lot and you don't die but there is still a huge sense of accomplishment at the end.Â
Maybe in 29 days my new favourite will be 42.2 (26.2). We'll see.
I just enjoy races. Seriously. They're so fun. It doesn't matter what distance, I just love how excited and high on life everyone is.Â
30 Day Running Challenge
Forgot to do one yesterday so here's two.Â
3. What ultimate running goal would you like to accomplish?
Since I started running, completing a marathon has been an ultimate goal. I will (hopefully) get to cross that off my list in one month (30 days today... ack).Â
My other goal is to complete a sub-2 hour half marathon. Until about a month ago I firmly believed that wouldn't happen. But I started with a new running group and a few weeks ago I ran 2:02:10 on a training run. A TRAINING RUN! That's with stop lights and all. So those have really been my two goals for the past three years and I'm coming quite close to achieving them :)Â
4. Tell us about your first race or when you plan to start!
My first race was a St. Patrick's day 5K. I ran it at the end of my clinic with all my clinic buddies and my dad. I finished in 28:11 which I consider not too shabby. Especially for a first timer. Who started training in the dead of winter. Words can't describe how proud I felt.Â
