i’ve been so distressed about the diminishing habitat and biodiversity in my state.

last year my friend bought a house. last week they brought excavators in to remove the backyard lawn. they are planning to put down paving stones and fucking. idk. decorative hosta i guess. truly the only think I can think of that’s worse than grass is fucking pavement

they pointed out an old deciduous tree on their property, and told me that it needs to come down. then, when i started talking about trees and native plants- she told me about the japanese maple they got from a honda dealership for free on arbor day

my mother has put a lot of work into her garden- including native plants. it’s a haven for a lot of birds- but her neighbors two houses down get their yard treated with mosquito repellant every year, even though mosquito borne illnesses are pretty fucking rare in this area. the fireflies i grew up with are gone. i see less and less dragonflies every year. i rarely see the monarch and tiger swallowtail butterflies i grew up with.

I also found a pitcher plant the day after reading all about their care needs! It was only $20 (cheapest one there… I’m vaguely suspicious it was a mislabeled) :) I’m hopeful I have success with it!
