Kim's Reputation and Dawson's Plan
Also will the kettlemans be in SK at all? I might have already asked that but
Good for you! SK doesn't have a ton of cameos from the previous shows. I try to limit any fanservice to stuff that makes sense keeping in mind that most people who knew Jimmy and Kim are either dead or hate them. That being said, I wouldn't entirely rule it out? The Kettlemens still exist and are probably still doing dirtbag schemes. The main reason they're just unlikely to run into each other again is that Kim moved to a different state, and even if she needs a patsy, it would be faster to just find someone LIKE the Kettlemans than actually tracking the original ones down to take advantage of them again. Kim does think about Betsy sometimes. The only way Kim can really say she's any better at this point is that Kim's actually halfway competant.
Betsy was such a cunt lmao I loved her
The reason I wouldn't rule it out is that Betsy might ACTUALLY be stupid enough to want a piece of Kim's success after she makes Capo. With basically any character from Breaking Bad's universe, the way you figure out if they'd be in SK is pretty simple: "Assume Kim and Jimmy are too busy for a trip down memory lane, so anyone who wants to make a cameo is going to have to seek them out". You talk to Saul & Associates when you want in "the game". But most of the law-abiding characters have the good sense to stay away.
Like we were talking about Camera guy earlier. PROBABLY smart enough to keep his distance? But the fame of being one of the few people to get a video interview with a reclusive crime family would be tempting.
I can imagine him starring in some cheesy true crime documentary about Saul and Walter
I'm sure there'd be a few questions about Walter. But true crime around Kim herself is on the rise in SK, especially near the end of her life when she stops appearing in public.
Some obscure YouTuber makes a 2 hours long video about her
Netflix too, probably.
For the record, there are YEARS after Kim dies where Iris still pretends they are speaking on their mother's behalf. Because why on earth would you tell your enemies you were vulnerable like that?
That's fair I suppose
Plus just Iris is a little bit in denial. Like they're not delusional, but of all the lies they've ever told, "you can't touch me cus my mom will still come after you" had to be one of the ones they wanted most to be true.
Iris was that kid that would be like "my dad can fight your dad >:)"
Hmm I have difficulty picturing exactly how Iris interacted with other kids at the schoolyard. I think they were alone. The other kids are afraid of her.
Oh valid
She can be braggadocios, but there's no way to get sincere feedback. Plus they move every couple years for "work" anyway.
Braggadocious lol
At one point I did start writing an entire parody script for a true crime YT video about her, but didn't get far into it. I mean being married to Saul Goodman and covering up a cartel murder, that's the beginning of her newsworthy behavior. There's speculation that she was connected to the assassination of the senator, but nothing could be proven. But she and Jimmy produced content for the church: sermons, televised revivals, fireside chats, etc. And those got popularized with YTPs.
Lmao in-universe ytps is hilarious
Most of the youth don't even particularly care about the immorality of the Heisenberg incident. Most people find the edits of Saul's old commercials and then fall down the rabbit hole of who this guy is. An oddity. But Kim did become a performer in her own right when they got back together. Kind of humiliating to have to get up there each Sunday and bullshit, but thems the breaks.
I feel like it'd be super interesting to see these videos
It'd be cool if slippin kimmy became real to make like webisodes
Well have you seen the "legal advice" shorts with Rhea on YT? I'm kind of pulling inspiration from that. Except not as ideologically coherent when you ask her to talk about God.
Yeah I've seen those they r pretty cool
S1E8 of SK includes an actually pretty serious scene where she finally takes the pulpit and talks about how even if it can feel like the universe sending you signs, it's dangerous to start basing your life around irrational beliefs, namely just to implore the remaining congregation to not fall into extremism like Mary and Peter. Namely because if extremism is what the congregation wants, she can't give it to them like Dawson promised.
But there's also the subtext that she's trying to talk herself out of this looming sublime dread. That... no of course the devil isn't helping her. The devil's not real. And even if it was, what do you even do with information like that.
I suppose you embrace it probably
Kim doesn't want to become superstitious. Iris was the biggest leap of faith she ever took, and when that paid off she was anxious not to lose it.
ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ
She would have loved to just have her privacy when Iris came along. But considering they stole money from the church to have her, it basically had to be a community affair.
They what :0
Kim was in charge of the treasury. The IRS doesn't look into church funds, it was pretty easy to embezzle. And I mean saying the money went to women's health research, that wasn't a lie. It just... would rock the boat less if the congregation was sold on the idea this was a miracle for everyone. 😪
Lmao not the embezzlement
Ms Kettleman core
When Dawson first approached her, Kim's plan was to basically get what she needed from the church to have a life with Jimmy and then get out. Dawson's plan ended up keeping her involved for a lot longer than she expected.
What was Dawson's plan?
Um... (frantically flipping through notes lol)
Lmaoo
I think Dawson was just trying to grow his business? Fake miracles, sabotaging competitors. controlling state government and law enforcement, and ideally training a replacement, since he doesn't expect to live many more years.
Kim is supposed to be his replacement right?
He takes a liking to Kim, and thinks she's got the right disposition for the job. But he promised Mary if she did this dirty work for him...
Why do they need to kill the senator again?
Again, the details are something I'm still trying to figure out. I'm not very good at writing the actual "crime thriller" part of a crime thriller, but I'm trying.
Well if it helps I think the story is really good so far ! 👍 :)
They don't HAVE TO kill him; Dawson just considers him an enemy. Cooke was a wealthy Republican whose fracking destroyed Mary and Peter's house. Mary and Peter thought it was that pollution why Dawson wanted him whacked; that Dawson was genuinely sympathetic. But in ep 7 I'm thinking Mary figures out that Dawson just wanted the land rights for himself.
Oooo
Basically, Dawson assumed that because of what Kim did to Howard, she'd be on board with the hitjob. That Kim's just being modest, but that she had vigilante sympathies too. But he overestimated her. I don't really try to frame Cooke as a sympathetic character. He's basically a redshirt. We hear Mary talk about all the reasons she hated this guy, but we only see one scene or two of him being an asshole on television.
I make it very clear through dialogue that this is not a "revenge is never the answer" type story, and more of a trolley problem. But it's still supposed to be a little unnerving, watching the only effective response to late stage capitalism be fanaticism. And of course Kim's not ready to straight up say that Cooke deserved it, because that's not who she wants to be. Even though Trump was what brought her to RUIC's doorstep in the first place, so it's not like there isn't a part of her that enjoys hurting those types of people.
But I assume after cooke dies another guy that's pretty much the same just takes his place anyway right
No, for all her finger-wagging, Kim ultimately follows through on the plan to install the independent candidate Dawson supported. Because that still ends up seeming like what's best for women's rights and working class people in Wyoming.
Oh sweet
Like I mentioned, there's an ongoing metaphor in SK, about how Dawson gained his political power because most people want to eat meat, but are too squeamish to kill the cow. Kim is uncomfortable with having a hand in terrorism, but she benefits from political violence nonetheless. She knows what she's doing in Episode 8 is fundamentally undemocratic, so she writes a confession and hides it in a time capsule. So that Iris (or somebody else, but it ends up being Iris) can turn it over to historians... after the effects are beyond undoing.
Oh wow..
Have I mentioned the details of the assassination plot? Taking a page out of "The Simpsons" honestly: The plan was that Mary and Peter would break into Cooke's house before he got home, damage his gas line, then create a spark when he walks into his kitchen. It was supposed to look like an accident. They had a whole routine where a septic truck would drive by his house every day for a week, so on the day of the arson, he wouldn't be suspicious of the smell. In traditional Breaking Bad fashion, I want episode 4 to show breadcrumbs of what Mary and Peter are planning, but the plan isn't spelled out until it actually goes into action.
And how does it fail? I think you said they get caught and go on the run
Yes I'm thinking there was a security camera they didn't account for. Maybe on the property across the street.
It was almost a perfect plan lmao
We see most of it from Kim's perspective. Episode 4, we see Mary and Peter mentally and emotionally preparing for the crime, driving to Cheyanne. And we see the Senator going going around his house, being annoyed by the stinky truck. And we see the split second before the spark is lit. But then we cut to Kim and Jimmy having just re-consumated the marriage, and when they turn on the TV afterwards, Cooke's house is on fire and the news is showing Mary's face captured on the camera. And Kim's just... she's sickened... but what's she going to do? Run away again?
And then Dawson commits suicide ?
It's one of the plot points I'm less confident about, but yes.
Hmm
