Eddie stumbles into his queer awakening because he starts obsessing over why none of the girls Steve hooks up with actually want to date him. Eddie doesnāt even know what "perfect boyfriend material" is, but he knows itās Steve.
Steve is confident but not full of himself like Eddie once thought. Heās romance novel level protective. Girls love that shit right? And he surprisingly has a goofy side, a sassy one too, and itās all wrapped in charm that makes it work.
Sometimes Eddie even feels like Steve is flirting with him⦠Smiling at him when he comes to the video store, leaning over the counter close to him, looking at his lips even when heās not talking.Ā
It flusters Eddie, makes his heart beat funny and puts a strange warmth in his stomach. The way he imagines any girl in Steveās beamer feels when he kisses her while some radio love song plays, but Eddie assumes Steve has that effect on everyone. Right? Eddie doesnāt get a lot of attention like that, he can never tell when he has a crush or heās just happy a girl gave him a look that wasnāt annoyed.
Then once, Eddieās renting a movie and Steve asks to join him later, but he frames it like heās asking Eddie on a date, giving Eddie that look that makes his stomach flutter and Eddie just canāt take it anymore.
Eddie blurts out, āI donāt get it, man. How do you not have a girlfriend? Youād be so easy to fall in love with. Hell, I feel like you've made me fall halfway in love with you already. If I was a girl, Iād date the shit out of you.ā
It hits him all at once as soon as it leaves his mouth.Ā

a/n: wow, I feel like I havenāt written anything in ages and iām sure this isnāt my best butā¦Maya has actually inspired me to kinda try and get back into it, so I wanted to get this little blurb out just for fun! :)
-
Lando had been uncharacteristically quiet recently, Daisy was set to leave for Los Angeles in a few hours and she was worried. Anyone who knew Lando Norris knew how goofy and outgoing he was, so to see him more toned down; wasnāt normal
āNothing, Iāve just been getting some work doneā¦ā
āYou havenāt even looked at me once since you woke upā
Daisy wasnāt the kind of girl to ever push, she was all to familiar with mental health struggles and Lando had been through some too, but she was going to be away for a whole week and didnāt want anything getting in between them.
āHave I done something to upset you?ā
āWhat? God no-no youāve done nothing my love..ā
Gone was his phone and now she had his full attention, his eyes softening seeing the distress in hers
āI okay-youāre going to think this is silly but I just want to know if youāre happyā¦with the way things are..?ā
Daisyās brows furrowed as she looked at him
āOf course I am, Iām the happiest Iāve ever been, why?ā
Running a hand down his face he just sighs
āWell a lot of our friends are having babies and you know becoming parentsā¦we are still not there and I just donāt want to make you feel left out of that..ā
Her heart clenched hearing the reason he was so upset, her hands reaching out to grab his face
āLando..ā
He stays quiet as she just smiles leaning forward to kiss him gently
āIām not ready for that yet, at all..I love that my friends and our friends are having kids because I get all the baby cuddles without that responsibility-truth be told I still want to wait for a few yearsā
She watches as he takes in what sheās saying, his shoulder slumping in relief a little
āYouāre still coming off a life changing year in formula one, iām finally getting more into modellingā¦not to mention we have Blondie and Cleoā
The two long haired dachshunds paused their tug of war game hearing their names, bounding over and up the pet steps to get onto the couch with her and Lando.
āI just-didnāt want you to feel like I was keeping that from you or holding you backā
Daisy just shook her head, her hands gently petting Blondie who sat curled up on her lap
āIām happy, extremely happy with the way things are right now, I donāt want that to change, weāve got our whole lives..ā
It was true, they were still young, with a wedding in October to celebrate their marriage with family there wasnāt a rush on children. Lando always wore his heart on his sleeve so his concern was enough to melt Daisyās just a little.
Right here and now cuddled up on the couch with the dogs was her favourite place. Nothing needed to change, everything was absolutely perfect the way it was, and that was always enough for Daisy.
Besidesā¦she wasnāt ready to share Lando, not yet at least..
Thereās this guy in all black walking in front of him, heās too busy looking down at his phone to notice, but Steve doesnāt trust that lamppost. Heās been going for daily runs, he likes to keep it simple during the off-season, and that post has been getting more rickety every day. Now itās swaying dangerously in the wind and he knows itās about to tumble.
Thereās no time to call out to the guy, so Steve just plows forward and tackles him out of the way.
They fall in a messy heap and Steve unfortunately lands heavily on top.
āHoly shit! What theā ugh!ā The guy heaves in pain and Steve hurries to scramble off of him.
āSorry, that post was about to fall on you, man. You alright?ā
Pieces of grass stick to the guyās long hair as he takes stock of Steve and what happened. With a labored breath, he surprisingly jokes, āGuess Iām lucky the best football tackler alive happened to be right behind me.ā
Itās sarcastic as shit but Steve smiles with a tug of amusement as he offers his hand. āBaseball, actually.ā
āYouāre in the wrong league, man,ā he lets Steve pull him to his feet and groans on the way up. āWell, nice to meet you, Baseball, you pack a hell of a first impression. Iām Eddie.ā
Steve would appreciate his ability to joke so soon after taking a hit, but people are starting to gather around. Thereās already phones pointed at them that probably caught the whole thing on camera. Steveās used to public attention by now, knows the press is going to have a field day with this and he hates causing a scene, but he wants to make sure Eddie is okay.
āJust Steve is good. You wannaā¦? This way,ā he gestures toward the sidewalk and thankfully, Eddie seems just as eager to get out of there too, shuffling next to Steve as they round the corner.
Heās wearing so much metal jewelry, itās like a costume, the jingle jangle of his every step accentuating how shaken up he seems. They get far enough behind a building and Steve stops to have a real look at him and⦠well heās interesting to look at.
Itās like he hopped off the album cover of an 80s rock band, or one of Steveās Bon Jovi posters that he hid under his bed in high school. Way too much leather and way too much hair for the California sun, all disheveled with grass and dirt.
āYou sure youāre okay? Here, you got a littleā¦ā Steveās hand hovers until Eddie nods that itās okay from him to pluck the grass from his hair and lightly brush the dust from his shoulders. Eddie watches him the whole time, his eyes big and dark, an intensity in them that Steve canāt quite read but he can feel. āDidnāt hit your head or anything, did you?ā
Steve lowers his hands, stepping back a little when he realizes how close they are. Eddieās eyes follow him, a slight quirk to his lips that makes Steve feel the heat of the sun a little warmer on his face.
āIām touched by your concern, sweetheart, but my brain has been through worse damage than a little bump.ā
Steve frowns at the ladder, but the first bit definitely makes him feel the heat. Heās admittedly a bit out of practice but he can still recognize a come on. One that he definitely invited with all the touching and indulgent looks.
Then Eddie starts profusely thanking him for the whole ordeal, asking to treat him somewhere nearby for lunch. Itās not that Steve doesnāt want to, heās very interested actually, and thankful that out of all the jewelry Eddieās sporting, thereās no wedding ring. Thatās why heās reluctant because heās all sweaty at the moment. Not to mention, he didnāt finish his run yet.
āSurely saving my life was enough cardio,ā Eddie jokes lightly and Steve snorts.
āI saved you from a minor concussion, maybe,ā and okay heās gotta accept now.
The place is small and unassuming, burgers and sodas type joint. Steveās likely to be recognized there, which he doesnāt mind meeting fans in public just preferably not now, it might be jarring for Eddie.
He heads for the booth tucked in the back corner, the most private looking spot that Steve had his eyes on too. They get a round of sodas from the waitress and right away, Eddie starts thanking him again.
āI noticed that lamppost wobbling days ago,ā Steve sparks a conversation instead of accepting any more thanks, āI was planning to let it fall on me so I could sue the shit out of the city.ā
Heās pleasantly startled by the big cackle that gets out of Eddie, āAny chance to stick it to the man. I admire that.ā
āāCourse I wouldāve really stuck it to āem and donated it back to the community,ā Steve adds.
āGiving the peopleās money back to the people, imagine Big Brotherās horror. Noble guy.ā
Eddie seems to bubble with contagious delight that doesnāt match his whole leather and chains thing at all, but it fits into the somewhat magic of him. It's a wonder to Steve.
āDo I know you from somewhere?ā Eddie ventures, a glint of recognition in his eyes that Steveās seen a thousand times. He doesnāt ping Eddie as much of a sports guy and heās not vain enough to assume everyone knows who he is. Eddieās probably seen him while flipping the channel past ESPN or something. Or maybe an ad for that Netflix thing he did documenting last yearās season.
āI think Iād definitely remember you.ā
Steve didnāt mean it as a come-on, just that Eddieās appearance really isnāt forgettable, but he can tell by the wicked little grin Eddie sports that it was taken as one. Steve likes that even better.
āHave you ever modeled, or anything? Youāve got the looks for it.ā
Biting back a smile of his own, Steve shakes his head. āI bet you say that to everyone who saves your life.ā
āNone of them were half as good looking." That sounds concerning but Steveās distracted by Eddie swirling his straw in his drink, regarding him with a long look. āReally though, I just feel like Iāve seen you before.ā
Steveās done a few covers of Sports Illustrated, but he doubts Eddie has ever picked up a copy of that, so he shrugs. āMustāve been in your dreams.ā
Eddie laughs softer this time. āYou trying to sweep me off my feet or something?ā
āAlready did.ā Steve leans back, enjoying the way Eddieās eyes follow him.
Conversation sparks and it never really dies out. Eddie just grabs topics out of thin air, talking about the city and what they like to do and movies and his amazement that Steve knows all about D&D because heās a nerd magnet. Eddieās personality spills through everything he says like it canāt be contained. Heās talkative in a good way, not to a point where Steve canāt get a word in. He listens intently, has a way of putting all his attention onto Steve like heās the most interesting person heās ever spoken to.
Itās surprisingly easy to relax. Not because Eddie has a super calming presence or anything, his energy is just all-encompassing, itās hard for Steve not to get sucked in and hang on to every word he says. Itās one of the rare times in public that heās not hyper-aware of everyone around him and too paranoid of having a photo snapped and taken out of context to even enjoy himself.
That happens a lot, being one of the only professional athletes whoās open about his sexuality. The media is extremely invasive with his private life. If heās seen with any guy friend, thereās a whole press storm about Steve Harringtonās āsecret beauā within the hour. Itās ridiculous and he tries so hard to keep his lovelife under wraps that maybe heās been neglecting it entirely, at least thatās what Robin says.
Of course, thatās when his phone lights up with a message from her. His heart sinks a little when he sees the title of the article she sent to him. He quickly shoots her a text and locks his phone without reading it.
āEverything alright?ā Eddie notices the shift in Steveās mood right away.
āYeah just,ā he sighs, bracing for the inevitable part when Eddie realizes Steve isnāt worth the hassle of all this, āSomeone filmed us earlier and now itās all over the press. Iām really sorry, I totally get it ifāā
āNah, donāt worry about it, itās fine. I figured that would happen,ā Eddie brushes it off, but Steve shakes his head.
āI donāt think you understand, itāsāā
āWanna bet?ā Eddie smirks for some reason, āIām fine with it, I promise.ā
He tosses a chip into his mouth and picks right back up with the story he was telling.
Steve is stunned for a moment, wary that maybe Eddie doesnāt fully grasp how deep this goes. But he stays there with Steve, seemingly thrilled to keep talking with him even when a family comes in and keeps staring their way, obviously building up the courage to come over and ask for a picture. Eddieās acting like Steveās the only person in the room and thatās enough to assure Steve that heās really fine with it.
Heās so locked into Eddie, he barely registers when the older son from the familyās table finally wanders over and asks for a picture.
Steve is in the middle of wiping his face with a napkin, about to greet him when suddenly, Eddie pops up and asks Steve to excuse him for a minute.
āCāmon little man, letās do it,ā he says and much to Steveās confusion, the teen excitedly goes with Eddie to his familyās table.
Steve watches, utterly baffled, as they start snapping photos and expressing what big fans they are and Eddie takes it with such bravado, laughing and chatting like heās with a group of friends.
What theā Steve grabs his phone, opening the article Robin sent him at lightning speed.
At first, he wonders how the press was able to find out Eddieās full name so quickly, then he sees the words "troubled rockstar" and "recovering star" so many times, it becomes abundantly clear.
Oh.
Heās not so worried about the troubled part, everyone has their shit and he doesnāt read into any of it. Those are Eddieās stories to tell Steve if he chooses, not some tabloid. But the rockstar part connects a lot of dots that have come up in the last couple of hours since meeting Eddie andā
Years after Eddie moves out and Wayne retires, Eddie comes by everyday to help around the house. Wayne doesnāt like the fuss, he wonāt be a burden, but the company is nice. The new place isn't as homey as the trailer, his memory's fuzzy about why he ever moved.
One day, Eddie shows up with the Harrington boy of all people. Not a boy anymore, a man fully grown but Wayne remembers him driving that shiny Beamer around Hawkins like yesterday. Eddie says they're old pals, but Wayne can't recall Steve ever coming around with any of Eddie's friends.
It's an odd pair, but Steveās good company. He chats about baseball, doesn't mind when Wayne mixes up last night's scores with a game 20 years ago. Then throughout the day, Wayne catches Steve giving Eddie the kind of looks and touches that make it clear what kind of pals they are, or at least what kind Steve wants them to be.
It warms Wayne's heart to see. Heās not gonna be around forever, and he always wanted Eddie to settle down with someone. It's hard for men like Eddie, for men like them, but he doesn't want that to stop Eddie from having the chance. So that night before they go, when Wayne's getting squared away in bed, he whispers to Eddie, "Steve's a good one, son. If you ever get ahold of him, don't you let him go."
Eddie just grins, almost something sad about it, and says, "Okay, old man. I'll keep him. I promise." The same thing he always says, every time this happens, but Wayne doesn't know that.
Every day is different, but sometimes Wayne remembers Eddie and Steve have been together for a decade. Sometimes he remembers the small backyard wedding, laughs about how it rained and Eddie slipped in the mud. Sometimes he remembers that he came to live with them when the dementia got worse.
But on days when it's all brand new, when he meets Steve for the first time again, he always knows that he's the right one for Eddie. So Eddieās gonna listen and hang onto Steve with everything heās got.
Eddie always writes reminders for himself on his hands, small stuff like āget an oil change, buy more eggs, just kiss Steve already you cowardā and he never washes it off good enough and wonders why Steve keeps asking him āAre you sure youāre not forgetting something?ā every time they hang out

Eddie has a mindless habit of picking at his ripped jeans. When he catches Steve staring, he doesnāt think much of it, his flashy rings draw attention easily. He teases Steve, āYou like shiny things, huh?ā
Itās a joke, but Steve doesnāt laugh. He looks away quickly, like heād been caught staring at something he wasnāt supposed to. That confuses Eddie, especially when it keeps happening. It doesnāt feel like a curious look anymore, Steve seems mesmerized by Eddieās fingers toying with the strips of denim.
Eddie finds himself doing it on purpose when heās around Steve. He lets his hand wander to the ripped denim, pretending not to notice when Steve looks, because he doesnāt want Steve to look away.
The realization slams through his chest. Eddie likes Steveās attention on him. Steveās gaze makes warmth simmer under his skin. Eddieās never felt that before, not just from a look, and especially not from a guy.
It terrifies him a little, he doesnāt know if itās attraction he feels for Steve, but itās new and dangerous. He chases the feeling, twisting his jeans to shreds just so Steve will look at him.
Steve comes over to smoke once, sitting next to Eddie on the couch. Theyāre close enough that when Eddie reaches down for his knee, his knuckles brush Steveās leg. Close enough that Eddie feels Steveās breath catch when the threadbare denim snaps, revealing more skin underneath.
Eddie wonders if Steve wants to slide his fingers inside too. He wouldnāt mind. The quiet thought strikes into a burning desire when he realizes he wants Steve to touch him. It flusters him to an insane degree when he dares to think Steve might want that too.
An awkward laugh rushes, finding Steveās heavy gaze on him when he looks over. āStare any harder and Iāll start thinking you wanna rip my clothes off, Harrington.ā
He goes blank when Steve replies quickly, like itās something heās been holding back saying for a while.
Thereās a dog that comes around the trailer park when Eddie moves in with Wayne, back when his head was shaved and his eyes were still haunted by the walls of his dad's house. No one wanted to play with the gaunt looking weird kid, so the first friend he made in Hawkins was this big brown dog, way bigger than any others. It was almost scary, wolf-like but he acted like a puppy, nudging Eddie with his snout, cheering him up, always wanting to play like maybe it was lonely too.
Then Eddie made friends at school, the dog visited less as he got older and more sure of himself, denouncing cliques, especially the jocks who lorded over everyone. The dog stopped visiting entirely and Eddie started to worry something happened to it.
Years later, he spots it with Robin Buckley of all people. Sheās talking to it, which might seem strange but Eddie always felt like the dog was a good listener too. After that, he tries to find his old friend again and one night, he catches a glimpse of him but he disappears into the woods.
Instead, Eddie sees Steve Harrington later that night, disheveled and dirtied, total opposite to his usual pristine polos and perfect hair. Itās so out of place, the first of many times that Eddie sees him while out looking for the dog. Eddie never says anything, canāt imagine Steve reacting well to a moonlight conversation with the freak. Sure, Steve was iced out of the popular crowd for reasons all around the rumor mill, made an odd match with Robin at their mall job before the fire, and weirdly enough the new Hellfire boys seem to worship the ground he walks on, but Eddie has no impression of Steve beyond that.
Then Chrissy Cunningham dies in his living room. Eddie runs like hell, terrified and ashamed, hiding in the boathouse. He feels like a scared kid again and finds himself wishing for the dog, his first friend that never judged him and always made him feel safe.
Thatās when an unlikely group shows up and Eddie has no time to hide, like they tracked him there by scent. Steve Harrington rushes right to him with big brown puppy eyes that feel so familiar somehow, so comforting. Stunned, Eddie lets Steve wrap him in a warm hug, nuzzling his ear with soft assurances, āHey, itās okay. Iām so glad we found you. Youāre okay.ā
To Eddie's amazement, his body just melts into Steveās embrace, like greeting an old friend.
When Eddie comes back from taking photos with the fans, he looks a little sheepish for the first time. Steve has about a million things to ask, mostly he just wants to laugh about the fucking odds, but he remembers the grace Eddie extended to him about the press ordeal.
Instead, he settles back with his lime soda and a simple question, āSo, what kind of music are you into?ā
A grateful smile breaks out across Eddieās face, ecstatic to dive into that with Steve. Their lunch extends into dinner. Steve doesnāt have anywhere to be these days and Eddie practically jumps up and down when the meeting he was in the area for gets canceled. They stay there for a couple more hours, just talking.Ā
Their music taste overlaps at certain points, Eddie talks about how getting his first guitar from the pawn shop pretty much saved him, Steve recounts a little league story that makes Eddie laugh so hard he chokes on his soda.
Itās the most monumentally casual time Steveās ever had with a new friend in public and heās not ready for it to end. Even after exchanging numbers and promising to meet up again, they still linger together outside.
āSo uh, I remember where I know you from now."
Eddie leans against the side of the building. Itās getting dark, theyāre tucked away from any eyes so Steve freely scoots closer to Eddie, waiting for him to explain. He does after a moment, seeming nervous and fiddling with his rings.
āI hate to ask, but my Uncle is huge into baseball, especially you and your general all-around-awesome thing. There werenāt players like you to look up to when he was young, all that. Iāve seen you on his tv so many times, youāre basically part of the familyā ah shit, thatās weird, sorry,ā he cringes a little, scrunching his nose in a way that makes Steveās chest clench with affection, āBut heās getting old and like I said earlier, heās my rock, he raised me and I wonāt forgive myself if I donāt at least ask you to come see him sometime.ā
The way he rambles is pretty endearing, looking at Steve with a wide-eyed hopeful expression, as if there was even a chance Steve would say no.
He reaches out, gently takes Eddieās hand to stop his restless fidgeting, āYou want me to meet your folks already, hm?ā
Eddie lets out an amused scoff, looking down at their hands and back at Steve like he canāt believe it. āYouāre not as funny as you think you are, Steve.āĀ
Steve knits his brows, āWhyās that?ā
āCāmon man. Yāknow how hard it is to find someone who can handle this lifestyle, let alone all the shit that comes with me,ā shaking his head a little, Eddie smiles but thereās something aching in it, āThen the nicest looking guy Iāve ever seen comes outta nowhere and saves my life, agrees to go to lunch, happens too know as well as me that life in the limelight aināt always pretty and turns out to be one of the best people Iāve ever met.ā
His fingers thread through Steveās, holding tight like heās not sure itās real. āEven if I never see you again, Iām gonna write songs about you. Iād take you home and keep you right now if I could, but thatās not happening.ā
Thereās a part of Steve heās kept shut down for years that comes pumping through his veins then, hot and alive. He realizes that heās been trying so hard to keep his life as normal as possible that heās been missing out on actually living it. Now he has this wonderful, crazy, wonderful man spontaneously in front of him and heās not letting him slip away.Ā
Steve moves in, slowly crowding Eddie against the wall. Eddieās eyes go a little wide with surprise then darken with desire. Steve watches his face shift through so many emotions, his mouth parting with a soft gasp, wanting this just as badly as Steve.
āWanna bet?ā Steve asks before he crashes into Eddie again.Ā
This time itās a hot press of lips instead of a full-body collision, but itās just as breathtaking.
Steve deepens the kiss, thrill prickling all across his skin when Eddie opens up for him right away. Steve licks passed the bright hint of lime on their tongues to get to Eddie. The heady taste of him makes Steveās world spin, all the desperate noises between them going straight to his head.
āWant you so bad, Eddie, wanna keep you too,ā he threads his fingers into all that hair, reveling in the shiver it elicits from Eddie, āGod, just wanna have you.ā
Eddie chases his lips, āYou can, Steve, you can have meā please do.āĀ Ā
Steve loves the sound of that, going in for a longer, more indulgent kiss before pulling back.
āYou canāt take me home tonight,ā he professes hotly against Eddieās lips, āMy place is closer, youāre coming with me.ā
