A cloud of dust trails after the Chameleon as it breezes down the road from Kingsland to the Enchanted Island. Ruby sits at the helm today, watched closely by Gene, on a routine trip to pick up Alex and Twinkle from fancy political negotiations in the neighboring land. Gene deemed the route “safe enough” for Ruby to practice her piloting skills. She’s enjoying every minute. She thinks she might swerve the Chameleon-- just a little bit-- to see if it’ll make Gene shriek.
But before Ruby can put her plan into action she notices a figure walking along the forest road. His armor is all black, and the coat of arms on his chest looks awfully familiar--
“Hey, I remember him!” Ruby snarls, and pulls the Chameleon to a sharp and unexpected stop. Gene nearly goes flying.
“Ruby!” he shouts after her, bracing himself against the dashboard. Ruby’s already gone. Gene makes it to the door in time to witness Ruby’s cry of “have at thee, you pox upon a squid’s left cheek!” before she lays into the Black Baron’s henchman with her sword.
Gene barely recognizes the poor man-- the mercenary did a very terrible job of waving his sword in Gene’s face about a week ago during some half-hearted attempt to kidnap Alex. Gene stalks out of the Chameleon.
“Ruby,” he calls tersely. “Ruby! We’ve got to meet Twinkle and Alex, we can’t be--” The clash of metal drowns out his words. Gene crosses his arms in a huff. “Make it quick,” he mutters.
Within minutes, Ruby has the henchman running for the hills.
“And stay away, you hear?!” she shouts after him. Ruby turns, breathless and victorious, towards Gene. He looks surprisingly pale. “What?” Ruby asks.
“...You’re injured,” he murmurs.
Ruby swings her arm around. A thin scarlet line streaks beneath the ripped sleeve of her jacket. It’s barely more than a scratch, hardly even noticeable-- Ruby’s got scars that would make Gene’s skin crawl. “This little thing?” she scoffs. “A slippery sardine could give me worse! I’ll just lick it clean--”
A shriek of horror and disgust escapes Gene. “NO No nO no,” he demands, pushing her towards the Chameleon. “The human mouth contains innumerable amounts of bacteria, and I will not begin to speculate on the hygiene of pirates. You are getting proper medical attention right this minute. I insist.”
Ruby allows herself to be escorted towards the vehicle with only minor complaints. She sits down gruffly on her seat inside. Gene busies himself with gathering medical supplies. He rants under his breath about how he CAN’T believe how she could be so RECKLESS and just RUSH into DANGER without ANY thought--
Ruby rolls her eyes. She shrugs off her coat, poking at the various bruises beginning to form. “I can take care of myself, you know,” she announces loudly.
Gene stops. He stiffens, and looks at her with a strange and guarded emotion Ruby can’t quite name. “That’s not the point.”
“Then what is the point, you nervous narwhal?”
Gene doesn’t answer right away. He takes a seat by her and fiddles with cleaning wipes and self-adhesive bandages, mulling over his next words.
“You’re part of a team now,” he begins, taking Ruby’s arm and wiping at the edges of her scrape. “You’re part of a team, and that means you ought to rely on us, rather than rushing off on your own adventures. It means-- you have people who worry about you, and care about you quite a lot, and they’re not entirely sure what they’d do if you ever got hurt-- I mean, really hurt.” Gene hides his face and pretends to rummage through the med kit again. “...I believe they would find it simply unfathomable.”
Ruby has known Gene long enough to understand all this fancy talk is a roundabout way for him to admit his feelings, both to himself and to her.
“Hey,” she says, a little less harsh. Gene glances up at her. “Why do you think I go rushing off into danger so much?”
“Gold?” Gene guesses. Ruby elbows him.
“It’s not all about gold, you lily-livered nitwit. It’s ‘cause you’re always looking at your fancy little techno-screen when we fight. I--” Ruby screws up her mouth. “...I worry about you too, okay? I wouldn’t want that pretty face of yours to end up on the wrong end of a troll’s club.”
Gene blushes, obviously surprised with her choice of words.
“Dumb face!” Ruby backpedals. “Stupid face! Dumb...cod...face. Ugh!” she slaps the bandage on herself, a little crooked, and rushes to the Chameleon’s controls before her beet-red face can burst into flame.

Okay I was thinking about a Super 4 roleswap AU and here’s what I’ve got so far:
Alex is the fairy prince of the Enchanted Island. His outfit is much more colorful and pastel; his crown is made of flowers. He has a wand instead of a sword and has spent the last few years of his life stuck in a classroom learning the various fancy old-world spells in order to become a good Fairy King. He’s very skilled at them-- in fact, he gets most of his practice in while rescuing his sister from witches, who intend to secure her hand in marriage by any means necessary.
Gene is a pirate, or, at the very least, the adopted son of a pirate. He much prefers his books to the rascally ways of pirating (which makes him the favorite subject of teasing), but his reputation begins to change when he discovers the “science” behind sailing. He builds tide clocks, crude barometers, and the pirates begin to believe he was “born from the sea” because he can read the waves like an open book.
Ruby is one of the best scientists in Technopolis. She’s not big on boring lectures or the stuffy, strict ways of Computer Supreme. What she is interested in is hidden knowledge, the “greatest treasure of all.” She gets caught on multiple occasions attempting to hack the city’s systems (and doesn’t get caught on several others, to her utter glee). Ruby’s room is full of hidden places to tuck away her purloined data and plans, all pulled out from under the nose of Dr. X.
Twinkle is a cook’s assistant working in the castle of Kingsland-- or, she was, until a clumsy trip down the stairs ended in a permanent dent in the Golden Teapot. She’s been cast out of the castle for the meantime. Lucky for her, her favorite pastime was sparring with the young knights, so she can bravely (although clumsily) brandish a sword at any trouble that comes her way. She is bubbly, charming, gallant, and looks excellent in a suit of armor.
A Super 4 fanfic featuring Ruby/Twinkle. Exchanging flower crowns is an old fairy tradition, but Ruby’s not too excited about the “flower” part...

“Ruby, could you open this for me?”
Ruby looks up from the treasure map she’s currently puzzling over. Twinkle hovers before her, a jar of jam in her hands and several messy streaks of flour across her hopeful face. They’re both holed up in the tiny cottage of a fairy nice enough to let Twinkle borrow her kitchen. Twinkle gestures with the jar towards Ruby.
“I’ve tried just about everything and the lid still won’t budge! I’d ask Alex, but, um, I thought your pirate muscle could get the job done!”
Ruby rolls up her map and tucks it next to a stack of teetering pots and pans. Pirates aren’t known for their kind deeds, but she’s all too eager to show off a feat of strength. “Leave it to me,” Ruby announces breezily. She whips off her coat, then rolls up her sleeves. With one hand firmly grasped on the jar, and the other clamped on the lid, it takes all of one flex of her arms to pop the vessel open-- almost too easy. Ruby hands the jar back to Twinkle with a proud shake of her hair.
“So, Twink, what do you need jam for? Are you making toast?”
Twinkle spins a pretty pirouette in the air. “I’m making jam tarts!” she exclaims. “It’s almost May Day and everyone celebrates by exchanging sweets!” A dark cloud passes over the fairy’s face. “...Almost everyone, that is. I haven’t been to a May Day celebration in years.” Just as quickly as the cloud appears, it vanishes again to reveal full sun. “But I’m meeting some friends this afternoon to celebrate with them! We’re going to drink tea, and tell stories, and make flower crowns! Oh, Ruby, doesn’t that sound like the best time in the world?”
Ruby shrugs off Twinkle’s enthusiasm. “Pfft, flower crowns. You’d never catch a pirate wearing one of those. They’re too girly.”
Twinkle’s face falls. She looks as though she’s about to say something, but a sudden cloud of black smoke sends her rushing back to the kitchen.
An hour later, Ruby wanders through the bright forests of the Enchanted Island, rolled map in hand. She meant to keep studying it after her chat with Twinkle, but--
She just can’t shake the image of Twinkle’s sad face. It’s not like she meant to hurt the fairy’s feelings! It’s just a fact that pirates don’t like flowers! She was only speaking the truth!
But at the same time, the forgotten map in her hand reminds Ruby of how much Twinkle means to her. How her bubbly laugh can fill a room, how her smile dazzles brighter than gold. How heart-achingly happy Ruby is to see Twinkle excited over the tiniest flower or bug. She means more than emeralds or diamonds ever could.
A small and scraggly stand of yellow flowers sparks an idea for an apology.
Ruby catches up with Twinkle just as she’s about to meet her friends.
“Twinkle!” Ruby rushes to say. “I’m so sorry about earlier, I know May Day is important--”
“Ruby!” Twinkle interrupts. “Oh, I’ve been thinking so much about what you said--”
“I made something for you!” they both exclaim at the same time.
Ruby reveals a drooping, crooked flower crown to find that Twinkle is also holding a flower crown before her-- although it’s got a curious lack of flowers.
Twinkle melts with joy at the sight of Ruby’s gift. “Oh, Ruby, it’s beautiful!” she gushes, and catches up the off-kilter crown. It hangs funny on her head, limp petals fluttering in a shower past her face, but Twinkle gazes up at Ruby as if she’s brought the fairy all of Gunpowder Island’s treasure. “I love it, I really do. It’s been so long since anyone’s made me a flower crown for May Day! And look at the flowers you used! Dandelions, for sunny thoughts, and forget-me-nots for everlasting bonds, and violets for-- um-- spring!”
Ruby rubs the back of her neck. She laughs nervously. “I’m glad you like it,” she murmurs. “I know it’s important to you.”
“Oh!” Twinkle says brightly. “I almost forgot! I made one for you, too! I know you said you didn’t like flowers, so-- I made one, just without the flowers.”
Ruby sweeps her pirate hat from her head with a flourish and allows Twinkle to crown her.
“It’s got fairy’s willow, for bravery, and black poplar for courage, and lovebine for-- well--” Twinkle blushes. “I forgot what those are for. Silly me! ...Do you like it?”
“Oh, Twink, it’s perfect! But, uh,” Ruby grins guiltily. “I didn’t know they were supposed to have meanings. I just grabbed whatever I saw for yours.”
Twinkle’s smile vanishes.
“But I mean every bit of it!” Ruby rushes to say. “You’re worth all the flowers in that stuffy Queen’s garden to me.”
“Even the roses?” Twinkle asks. She reaches out to place her fingers in Ruby’s calloused hands.
Ruby’s words ball up into a knot in her throat. She gives Twinkle’s hand a squeeze. “All the roses, Twinkle-- every last rose in all of the seven seas.”
