Ruby is hiking through the Cascade Mountains today and has set up camp in this lovely clearing! She loves the way the bright green grass contrasts against the vivid colors of her tent.

She enjoys the cool breeze coming through the trees after a strenuous hike up.

The sun is beginning to set, so Ruby puts on her pajamas and spreads her sleeping bag out by the campfire.

It’s a beautiful summer day, and three of the girlies are going off to summer camp!

Rebecca is first, heading off to Camp Nokomis. In the 1910s, summer camp was a way for kids to escape crowded cities, where it was hoped that being out in nature would protect them from the diseases circulating back home (such as polio) while also building character.

Molly is second, on her way to Camp Gowonagin. Summer camps of the 1940s were similar to camps of the 1910s in that they provided time away from cities and focused on developing healthy bodies. Wartime summer camps often featured military-themed games and routines inspired by the lifestyle of soldiers.

Ruby is third, going to Pine Lake Camp. In the modern day, summer camps are an outlet for children to learn responsibility and self-reliability while appreciating the beauty of nature. There are many different types of summer camps, with some being more traditional outdoors-focused camps and others being music or STEM themed.

In honor of my finally finishing school, I decided to see where my modern characters are when they’re done with college. I’m so proud of them!

Katherine got a degree in oceanography and is applying to jobs at NOAA. In the meantime, she volunteers at the Seattle Aquarium.

Ruby went to school for forest resource management, and she’s secured a summer position in Grand Teton National Park. Bon voyage, Ruby!

Jennifer just graduated from her premed program and will apply to medical school soon. Good luck!

Daisy got a degree in animal behavior. She just got a job working at the Oregon Zoo in the Vollum Aviary!

Marguerite’s geology program was fascinating! She now joins her mother at work on geological surveys. After all, carpooling saves gas!

Rosemary studied international relations and is interning for the CIA. She’d tell you what exactly she does, but she signed an NDA.

Nancy got a degree in music while playing with her band Bebe Le Strange all throughout college. She’s secured them a weekly gig at a venue in Chicago!

Amanda studied volcanology and is applying to jobs with USGS, and she plays drums for Bebe Le Strange in the meantime.

Evelin decided to get her degree in electrical engineering while also running track for her college. She’s gonna make it to the Olympics someday!

Annalise won a full-ride scholarship to art school and got her degree in painting and drawing! She’s now applying to illustration jobs at video game companies.

Natasha just finished her degree in biology and will start radiology programs in med school! In the meantime, she’s a receptionist at her local physical therapy clinic.

Jennifer:

Favorite season is autumn

Plays with her mother’s Miss America Barbie doll

Loses track of time easily and will stay up very late working on her knitting projects or watching TV

Katherine:

Has sensory processing disorder and is especially sensitive to loud sounds

Favorite holiday is Halloween

Puts glitter stickers on everything she owns

Evelin:

Favorite musician is Rufus Wainwright

Sets up a hummingbird feeder outside her bedroom window every summer

Got into making amateur radios as a fun way of communicating with her friends during the Covid pandemic

Nancy:

Favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day

Listens to at least three Talking Heads albums a week

Wants Amanda to play drums so that they can be like Van Halen

Amanda:

Favorite book is The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate

Broke her wrist skateboarding when she was 11

Watched a TV program about volcanoes once and now is a little afraid of them but also fascinated by them

Rosemary:

Never sleeps with a blanket because it feels too constricting

Favorite food is a grilled cheese sandwich with a fried egg on top

Bakes lemon bars with her Mama at least once a month

Daisy:

Is afraid of ghosts

Loves foxes and has a beloved fox Squishmallow

Pours soy sauce directly on rice to make her grandparents mad (manners in Japan dictate that you dip a bite in sauce instead of pouring it over your food) (and Daisy knows it)

Ruby:

Has a scar on her ankle from a Razor scooter with a vengeance

Most treasured possession is a sunflower-print fleece blanket from her grandmother Marie

Favorite food is 4th of July hot dogs

Marguerite:

Wants to live in an old Victorian house

Has a huge collection of interesting rocks and crystals and wants to have an entire rock display wall

Ruby Ella Eriksson was born on August 11th. she is a modern-day girl and incidentally comes from 1983. She lives in Ballard, Washington, with her parents Lena and Rex. She likes hiking, camping, and playing Animal Crossing. When she grows up, Ruby wants to be a National Park Ranger.
