So stumbling through the internet in the wee hours of the morning & googling one of my all time favorite actors Ethan Hawke; I found he was working on a movie about the Apache. Directed/co-written by him. It was budgeted at $240 million dollars with a 900 page document & it was getting its legs until it became clear to him by studios looking at it that it wasn't going to be made if there were no white actors in it. So he had to scrap it. The interview with him is so good. He said 1/2
He was partly inspired to co-write it because of the movie Geronimo: An American Legend (1993) starring Robert Duvall, Matt Damon, Jason Patric & one Cherokee actor Wes Studi. He said you wouldn't(shouldn't) make Malcolm X starring Matt Damon, Robert Duvall, Jason Patric...& Denzel. He said though it's what's expected. He also said that's why so many stories about history in America that aren't told need to be because if they're not, they're in danger of being lost which is so true.
The industry is in a sad state. People still jump on the bones of directors like Ridley Scott for Exodus or actresses/actors Scarlett for Ghost In The Shell, but truth be told is that the probability of neither one of those movies getting made without the casting choices that were made is high. They wouldn’t have been greenlit without “bankable talent” at those budget price points. Ever. People would just rather live in denial and scream into the void about “whitewashing” than accept how this business works. Does it suck? Sure. Is it wrong? Absolutely. It’s still the reality of how the studio system functions and while y’all still showing up to watch the shit they put out nothing is going to change.
That post you wrote in regards to Ridley Scott is spot on. So many people yell about the problems in cinema being because of the studio/directors but it's the audience. It's what they spend their money on, it's the fact that they continually see the same recycled crap. And then, then you can somewhat blame the studios only because it's the audience that is shelling out ridiculously large amounts of $ to see the next Marvel movie which is literally the same story told over & over but with 1/2
Different characters. Ridley Scott got shit because of his movie Exodus which had white men cast in MOC roles. But he again laid out the truth that audiences aren't going out & seeing movies with diverse cast so studios aren't going to risk casting actual POC in roles. It's not just the studios fault, it's the audience. The reason Depp & ScarJo are the 2 highest paid actors is because of the audience. People can yell all they want but their the reason studios won't take risks.
I obviously think Ridley had a point but it’s also about how you communicate said point that affects how it’s perceived. He didn’t word himself correctly keeping in mind the ultra PC society we live in now and people immediately pounced on him when all he did was lay down the facts. After a certain amount of zeroes in a budget the studio basically expects to get their money back and the safest way they can try to do that is by casting “bankable” talent. The higher the budget the less the risks taken and that absolutely includes casting. It’s partially why I’m so vehemently opposed to big budget movies. It is what it is though. You know this isn’t a topic we can touch upon on tumblr without being called a racist, so I’m just going to leave that there.
Everything else you said is spot on. If you make the same variation of a superhero movie twenty times and people still show up, then why try something new? Entertainment is a business. Most of the people who run studios and networks aren’t creatives, they’re business minded zombies who are in it to make money for their shareholders. Until audiences prove to them that their stocks will still pay for their three vacation homes and their Tesla then they will keep doing the same old thing that keeps making them easy money over and over again.
I mean...I’m 27. Since I was in middle school there’s been how many sequels and reboots of Spiderman??? How many times do you need to see Peter being bit by a spider and dangling off buildings??? It’s so unnecessary but until people stop showing up to the movies we’re going to keep getting them. I sometimes think this is all common sense and that people should know better but then I remember Brexit and President Trump are a thing and stand corrected.
