Today's adventure, feed myself. Objective: acquire and use one item with the food quality and the prepared quality. Xp: 12 Gold: 0 Focus: +5
Nursing as a RPG
GM: your handover is interrupted as your patient is complaining of chest pain, you're an assistant in nursing and your RN asks you to take a set of obs. What do you do?
Me: I get the nearest obs machine and I also grab the ECG machine on the way to the patient
GM: Ok, you grab the Obs machine (rolls dice) it's an older model so you're quite familiar with how to use it. You get a +1 to your heal check. The ECG is also a model you're familiar with but as you're only proficient in taking EGGs but not interpreting you don't get a bonus.
Me: right ok, well I go up to my patient and introduce myself and begin taking a set of obs.
GM: (Rolls dice) ok continue
Me: the obs come up (rolls heal check) and I make the trained DC 15.
GM: the obs are within normal ranges, vitally your patient is stable.
Me: ok I ask the patient about their pain on a scale of 0-10, 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain they have ever felt. I don't crack a joke this time considering the patient's potential diagnosis for this incident. I also ask about the quality of the pain, as in if it's dull, stabbing, burning... That sort of thing. I also ask if the pain raidiates or is stationary.
GM: ok well your patient tells you that their pain is 8 out of 10, is located in their chest area but upon inquiry it doesn't radiate anywhere.
Me: I chart everything on the relevant document nation and then begin to prepare the ECG and the patient for said ECG. I lie them flat on the bed and remove anything that will get in the way of placing the leads.
GM: (rolls dice). The RN walks in to help you. Just as finish setting up the ECG machine, your patient makes a strange noise. Roll initiative
Me: (rolls d20) 17.
GM: right well since you didn't notice the vomit bag clutched in the patient's hands nor did you get the full handover due to the complaint of chest pain you're flat footed against this uhh... acid attack?
Me: you could just call it vomit...
GM: Nup, this patient has an acid attack that has a max range of 10 ft. Does (rolls d20) oh, does 9 hit your flat footed touch AC? No? Ok (rolls d8) 1 ok it lands right in front of them but it splashes and you are in the splash radius. Roll a reflex save.
Me: *sigh* ok fine. (d20 rolls) 24! AND I have evasion, so if I've saved against the DC I don't take any damage.
GM: Ok, your patient belches forth a miniature fountain of bright yellow vomitus that lands with a splat between them and you. You manage to jump out of the-
Me: "JESUS!", what I'm role playing here.
GM: -way. Ok normal round. It's the patient's turn again. They continue to vomit but you gather that the vomiting was as much a surprise to them as it was to you so they're now just vomiting off the side of the bed rather than at you. Your RN goes next, as a free action she tells you to hand the patient a vomit bag and then delays as she's out of position to do anything useful. Your turn.
Me: I use a swift action to grab the bag from the desk next to me and a move to thrust it in the patient's direction, careful not to get vomit on me.
GM: Right well you've gotten pretty close to the vomit now. Roll a fortitude save to avoid becoming nauseated and sickened. If you beat the DC by 10 you negate any effect.
Me: Well I am a nurse by class and I am level 2, so I get bonuses and my CON is pretty good too. (rolls 1d20) how's a 25? *grins*
GM: More than sufficient, you avoid all secondary effects from the smell of stomach acid. You still have a standard left.
Me: I use it to move the ECG machine away from the spew, did it take any damage?
GM: surprisingly no, it did not. the ECG was adjacent you but not adjacent the square that was hit by the spew.
Me: are we still in initiative?
GM: Nah, the patient's vomiting is slowing down, but you do realise that you're going to need to change the sheets.
Me: Great, ok I start doing that.
GM: Well for successfully avoiding getting puked on and responding appropriately to the complaint of chest pain I'll give you 100 exp. You can try to gain more if you can figure out why the patient is doing this.
Me: But that falls outside of my character's scope of practice and thus doing so would put me at risk of invalidating my contract
GM: So right you are, the RN goes to page the doctor while you're cleaning up. You still get to keep the 100 XP but I'm going to make you save again while you're cleaning up :P
