#rp process

I've retired quite a few over the years- I used to be a lot more of an altoholic, but as I got older and had less free time, it got tougher to juggle more alts. Sometimes I think it'd be fun to have more alts again, but I don't have nearly as many ideas for characters as I used to, and I'm quite happy with the characters I do have! I suppose in a sense, I've unretired a couple- Alth included, though she was never officially 'retired', just put on hiatus. I have a tough time truly writing characters off (which is why you'll likely never see me genuinely kill one off-- what if I want to play them again a few years from now??)

Oh, lord, yes. Chuckled, snickered, smiled, laughed. Sometimes I'll copy my post into a notepad or something to see if I repeated a word, because as soon as I lose sight of it when writing an emote, I forget what's there. 😂 It's a problem. I really should just keep, like, a thesaurus by my desk so I can use some synonyms.

IDK how successful I am with it, but I feel like when given the space to do so (because multiple paragraphs isn't always feasible in social spaces!), I write inner dialogue/emotions pretty well. I try to think about 'okay, but how does it physically -feel- to experience xyz emotion', like anxiety feeling like you swallowed a stone, or sadness making you feel cold, etc. Maybe that's because I'm a pretty emotionally-oriented person myself, and so I try to draw from what -I- feel when I experience those emotions? IDK. But I feel like that's something I'm pretty good at.

At least, for coming up with plots and events. I usually just word vomit and braindump into a Google Doc and then go and refine as the inspiration hits, and then it slowly gets more structured, becomes an outline, etc. The starting point is usually, "Oh, wouldn't it be cool/fun/interesting/horrifying if.." and I just go from there.

For RP, the biggest thing is just me keeping in the back of my mind, "Okay, but how would Alth respond to this?" And trying to keep in mind the important bits of her characterization- she doesn't swear, she speaks more formally (so for instance, I'll always use 'going to' instead of 'gonna', 'want to' instead of 'wanna' when typing on her, vs. another character), etc.

I have so many retired characters and I would unretire any of them if the incentive was right. Quite a few that are retired are from RP partners leaving games, so if they came back, and I was still playing that game, I would happily go back to writing with them, well… most of them.

Other characters I have retired just didn’t find their niche in an RP group. If there was ever a place that I felt like that character would be a good fit I would give them a new place.

Ori is actually one of those. I created her to RP with a friend back in BC and within three weeks they had left the game for another. They have come back, but they have no interest in RPing, so I broke her out to have another character for Cakes when Nahi is busy.

7. I do, but in a general sense. I have things I would like to see happen, but RP with people means I have to be flexible in where they might end up.

9. Every character has a little of me in it (go Gemini) but Nahi started as my therapy character, so she has A LOT of me in her. Mirri does as well, she is that quiet more serious side of me, which is an aspect that Nahi hides 21. Going at this from an RP in games standpoint as I RPed long before writing it with others. I used to do a lot more one on one RP and would only have one character I was playing. We would RP during raids, but we were more into the RP aspect over PVE focus others were. Feathermoon Forum RP came next, we had our own server for it which was great because we could take our time and overlap with stories with other people. It was also easy to be in many stories at once For a while, I got swept up into long nights of RP so everything finished in game. I LOVE in-depth in-game RP and would love to do more of it, but three hours or so just aren’t the best for that, so I go to Discord for those types of situations now. My up until 5am to conclude an RP is just not something I would like to do. I also use headcanons for so much more than I used to now. Writing something out with someone just makes it easier for me to know what is going on in my characters mind, but headcanons are nice for figuring out things with friends who have even less time than me in game. And they want to spend that with more than one person, or specific people that aren’t me. Headcanons have been really nice for that, even though I feel a bit of a disconnect there in my character’s place in my mind.
