warnings: just old traditions and outdated image of women
a/n: the first half of this chapter was already in the preview but I kinda needed it to start off with the rest. Sorry if that makes it boring to some of you :(
“Keep upright!” your mother hissed, inconspicuously nudging her elbow in the corset of your regal dress. But you would take it without a wince knowing exactly that this was the most important moment of your whole live.
A long line of beautifully dressed, young, high-born woman strode through the throne room, one after another facing Asgards king to make her debut in this social season. Light breaths, corralled by tight dresses made out of the finest silk and cotton were drowned by Odin's strong voice.
A shiver ran down your delicate spine everytime your terrified eyes saw the king sending a girl to the side without a single comment. Probably the death sentence for their desperate wish to find a husband; better said their parents' wish.
Every other girl who has been honored with at least a greeting, was swooning over the chance to marry Thor, the crown prince who was eventually ready for marriage after the time of freedom his mother had obtained for him.
Since it was your first time in Asgard, you were absolutely clueless about how the man looked like in real life instead of on canvas….
Your tense muscles were threatening to fully stiffen as the girl in front of you was facing the king. You were next… Your mother took a step away from you as it was common and your pulse shot in unimaginable highs. Of course, she wanted you to marry the prince. Every mother would stop at nothing in order to get her daughter married into Asgard’s royal family.
“The Duchess of Svarbård presenting her daughter y/n Svarbadottir” the king’s highest advisor announced you with the same monotonous voice as with all the other young ladies.
Head down and gaze averted you curtsied in front of Odin's huge throne feeling the piercing pairs of eyes all over your body eager to find even the tiniest mistake. Slowly, elegantly straightening your back again you casted up your eyes. With an hint of submission your glance finally met Odin’s.
The old king sat in his throne haughtily, eyeing every inch of your face and posture for a time that felt like eternity. But you were strong, sustaining the remarkable pressure weighing on your soft demeanor.
In the corner of your eyes you spotted Thor, a tall muscular man with broad shoulders clad with a red cape, long blonde hair and a very masculine, distinctive face. He was handsome, indeed yet another figure caught your interest. A gold helmet adorned a razor sharp face, mysterious emeralds eyeing you through narrowed eyes as his veiny hands toyed with each other decently.
“Flawless, my dear” Odin’s praise pulled you back into reality; your mother stepped back to your side, smiled at the king with thanks and pulled your nearly shaking body to the side.
The guests were gasping and whispering as you passed them, a snobbish grin forming on your proud mother's lips. “Flawless” she repeated to herself, still bathing in the glorious compliment no other debutante has gotten from the king. You were well aware of what great extent Odin's words had on your 'worth', surely making you the most desirable woman over the next weeks.
“We have to hurry, y/n! Seems like the jewel of the season comes from the noble family of Svarbård this year” your mother boasted as you threw one last look at Asgards younger prince who was somehow far more handsome than his praised brother. In a brief moment of unfamiliar intimacy his unique orbs pierced yours one last time before the heavy, golden door fell shut behind you.
“We have to get you ready for tonight's ball, my dear” your mother began gesturing to find your maids in the crowd of debutantes, their family members and Asgards royal guards.
“The prince will be enchanted by you!“
"I do hope so, mama" you muttered trying to shake off the captivating look the younger, intriguing prince gave you. You had read Lady Camille’s society paper and therefore knew he was not on the look for a wife this season. Maybe he wouldn’t even attend the upcoming balls.
"Astrid, tell the coachman that we are heading to the modiste. My daughter needs to pick up tonights gown and it seems like we have to order a few more" your mother chirped, the emotions of the last twenty minutes still surging through her veins.
💎💎💎
“Attention! Your hair ornaments" your mother quietly hissed reaching out to fix the glimmering pearl accessory which was interwoven in your pompous braid. You kept still as her hasty hands adjusted whatever was not right but your system was full of adrenaline as you faced your first ever ball as debutante. After the king’s words this morning you were sure all eyes would be casted on you what only increased the pressure to deliver flawlessness.
Traditionally, the opening ball took place in the palace of Asgard, carriages, noblemen and women lining up to arrive on schedule. Unmarried Ladies and nervous, pale debutantes entered the elegantly decorated ballroom in hope to be picked by one of the coveted bachelors. If you were remaining after the men walked along, Lady Camille would know what means that soon the whole Ton would be gossiping about you.
The hall was well filled leaving you no space to get a glimpse of the throne area. Beautiful gowns, exquisite suits and tuxedos and a quartet playing in the background were overwhelming your anxious senses yet the proficient, polite smile never left your rosy lips. Your mother had trained you to contain a ladylike posture in every situation since you were old enough to wear a gown.
People were starting to move out of your way eyeing you to find an imperfection they could feed Lady Camille to outdo their most dangerous competition. But there were none. Not a single thing the Ton could criticize. Maybe they would create their own rumors or just wait until times delivers…
"This year’s social season shall be inaugurated" king Odin’s voice boomed through the hall sending shivers down every young woman’s spine. They all knew what was to come next and so did you; the first dance where the bachelors were to choose one of them and this year it was even more special due to the crown prince being amongst them.
Breaths hitched around you, the scent of sheer nervousness and anxiety filled the room as elegant leather boots walked across the ballroom bringing the men closer to their desired Ladies. But first and foremost, there was prince Thor radiating pure masculinity with his battlefield experienced body. Broad shoulders trailed a red cloak behind them, silver plates adorning the armor's chest part and blonde hair spilling on his back gathered by a leather tie.
Mothers twitched, young women straightened their backs as he strode past the semicircle of hopeful debutantes, every single one praying that he would stop and ask for the notorious first dance. If Lady Camille would write about one event for sure, it was this exact night.
“He’s coming! Smile!” Your mother hissed veiling her serpent tongue with a polite smile, striving to keep any potential scandals away. Instead, she wanted you to shine brighter than any other debutante, you; the flawless jewel.
Not ten seconds later Thor towered in front of you respectfully nodding as he offered his hand, the other one fixed behind his back like a well-mannered gentleman.
"Lady y/n of Svårbard, would you do me the honor of tonight’s first dance?” He cooed, his deep, raspy voice sending a trail of goosebumps along your neck. You had never talked to the prince before and now he took your hand leading you towards the dance area. You out of more than 100 debutantes and bachelorettes.
“What a perfect match, aren’t they?” Odin asked regarding his question as rhetorical since he knew he was always right.
“Indeed. But let us wait if there will be young love blooming” Frigga stated secretly hoping for both of her sons to marry for love one day. A rare happening yet all the more captivating to watch.
“Frigga! He needs a presentable looking wife with good manners and who gives him an heir. If the princess won’t attend, she is this year’s jewel” Odin explained gesturing lazily with the wine jug in his hand. Frigga’s disappointed expression brushed Loki who just arrived from the back of the huge palace. Probably from the library as his mother presumed.
Maybe he would find love then, she thought as a smile curled her spotless lips at the sight of her younger son looking so handsome.
“Mother” he greeted her, kissing her delicate hand like he always did.
“Father”
“Son! Look, your brother has made his first choice!“ Loki lazily followed Odin’s pointing nod with an hint of indifference. A feeling that faded as soon he laid eyes on you. The jewel. Your elaborate gown swung in the wind of Thors dominant lead, your mysterious eyes casted up on his brother as you seemed to talk. He had seen several hundred of beautiful young woman but never has one been so intriguing without even having talked to him.
"Loki? Have you listened to me, dearest son?" Frigga asked stepping closer to him after trying to get his attention. "Whatever is it?" He breathed unable to avert his gaze from the beautiful woman who seemed… bored by Thor's conversational skills. Of course, she hid it behind the polite facade every debutante had to put on in order to find a husband. But Loki saw though the blackout curtains of forced perfection.
"There is potential within her. A potential princess?" Frigga whispered with a knowing smile. She had seen who caught her son’s analyzing emeralds which, usually, weren't too easy to imppress.
"If you allow mother, I presume Thor’s conversation does not seem to be very enthralling" he replied gathering his senses again and letting his gaze wander across all those dancing pairs who were destined to spend an awfully dull life in a marriage the ton stipulated. Never has he regretted his choice to take advantage of being the second in line to the throne and postpone his own marriage.
"Thank you for this dance, Miss y/n" Thor noted as the music finally abated signaling the end of this season's first dance. You curtsied, smiling politely at the tall prince who naturally drew all the attention on you.
"It was a pleasure, my prince" you smiled before he nodded and headed back to his family. You should be utterly happy, beaming with pride but there was nothing really.
Your put on smile only grew broader from the exited expression of your mother who was about to swoon upon seeing her precious jewel being chosen by the prince. "How do you feel, dear?" She nearly screeched, her powdery cheeks glowing red. You made her proud so you shall be happy, too. Your worth was reduced to the man who was showing interest in you hence pleasing the crown prince was the only right choice.
"Miss y/n, would you like to dance?" The Duke of Ansgar approached you with an interested look on his relatively old, wrinkled face. He has been widowed for a long time and was now looking for a young bride to sire an heir. Displeasing but you had to dub it.
"The jewels scintillates" your mother noted, a satisfied grin on her face as she discreetly signaled you to accept his prized offer. Inconvenient was the right adjective to describe the dance with his clumsy figure and the taciturn, bland conversation. Maybe you just had to accept the fact that these noblemen were looking for a wife to bear them children and manage a household, nothing more.
"Will she be the one? Have my assumptions been right yet another time?" Odin boasted as Thor stepped back at his side rubbing his neck in deep discomfort. "Father, I have told you I am not wanting to marry this season" he complained, his husky voice a plead at Odin’s fatherliness.
“Nonsense!" Odin boomed, ominously hoisting Gungnir at his son’s audacity to oppose.
"Father, if I may interrupt. I will go dance" Loki announced only gaining a disinterested wave. He must get away from those two before they would ruin their own reputation by yelling at each other during a ball.
With long, regal strides he passed the guests who were chatting and drinking at the side of the dance area, magically summoning all the attention. He was handsome, a rake yet far beyond their reach.
You were just about to spin to the right, away from the Duke as his hand slipped away from yours replaced by a bigger hand with longer digits weaving past yours to lock hands with you. As the women’s solo part was finished you spun back, a strong but still gentle hand pressed on your back. This certainly wasn’t the old Duke.
their music:
With eyebrows twitching perplexedly and eyes widening you looked up meeting those captivating emeralds again. It was prince Loki who watched your confused facial expression battling against the need to maintain posture with an amused smirk on his velvety looking lips. You had never spoken a word to the notorious prince but the way he held and lead you through this waltz felt special.
"Would you grant me the honor of this dance, Miss y/n?" he asked skilled arms leading you into every turn and spin. Your mind was irritated and fascinated at the same time, your lips parting but what escaped them clearly wasn’t in your favor.
"You’re asking me that now, my prince?" You quipped, your wit instantly matching the challenging aura he radiated without spending a single thought on how inappropriate it was. An impressed, raven eyebrow rose at your question; something no young woman would have ever dared to say.
"My heartfelt apology" you sighed, trying to pick up an apologetic smile while your cheeks were mercilessly blushing.
“Whatever for? I presume someone has to coax your conversation since my brother didn’t seem to be quite entertaining" he replied, a sharp smile highlighting those chiseled features that had captivated your gaze once before this morning. He was even more handsome up close.
"Oh, I found your brother to be most polite". You knew it wouldn’t be wise to criticize him in presence of his only brother. The royal family was untouchable.
“Is that so? I wager he told you how exquisite your gown is" he chuckled while you were drowning in his beauty and the way he spoke so freely yet so incredibly charming. And his voice… You knew you could listen to this voice for an awful lot of time.
"How did you know, my prince?" You replied daring to show a little giggle of yourself what instantly captivated Loki’s senses. The way the corners of your rosy lips coyly curled upwards and the witted sparkle on your y/e/c orbs was intoxicating. He didn't doubt his father's decision to elect you as the jewel.
"I’m afraid I grew up with the tiring manners of Asgard's noble society. It is not much of a riddle how these dull noblemen work, darling" he drifted away telling you things he most certainly shouldn’t but he couldn’t help himself but being thrilled for your answer. You were extraordinarily interesting, so much more than just a pretty facade for some nobleman to adorn himself with.
"Well, then you shall be jubilant not to be burdened with the task to marry one of them" you grinned tilting your head theatrically feigning exhaustion. You knew this was not something to be made fun out of. It was your destiny however, prince Loki conjured the truth out of your mouth with an impressive ease. You felt safe talking to him even after knowing him only for a few minutes. Your heart and mind were blooming in the refreshing wind the prince emanated.
"What a sharp-witted young lady you are, Miss y/n. A jewel indeed" he whispered bowing down to you as the dance became slower. He knew he was sacrosanct in his position as prince of Asgard, an Odinson, so he gave in to the need to explore you further. You were destined for his brother but Loki couldn’t resist the temptation you radiated like the gleaming morning sun rising above the hills of Asgard.
"You are making me blush, your highness" you breathed. A shiver ran down your spine as his his flawless chin and lips emerged in the corner of your eye. A scent of leather laced with an hint of old books and moist pine forest invaded your nose captivating your thoughts like an aphrodisiac.
"I will make sure my brother becomes capable of the same, darling. Such an intellect is not to be neglected" he groaned silently, cocking his head to fixate your eyes with his sparkling emeralds pulling you into a trance of a loud silence that spoke more than a thousand words.
If Loki was to marry; this alluring woman would be his bride. Without a doubt. But he was bound to his decision not to marry anytime soon and maybe he was even afraid of exceeding his self-set boundaries. He simply wasn't the man to settle down and have a family. Furthermore he was aware of his father's wish. You should be Thor’s.
The music stopped and the couples around you were parting again. With your delicate hand still lying in his you curtsied bowing your head respectfully like you should when interacting with high royalty.
“No, my dear. Spare these for my brother" the prince said before he kissed your hand never averting his narrowed eyes from yours. Goosebumps spread from the exact spot luckily covered by your white satin gloves. He was a wise, well-spoken, handsome man with a refreshing repartee and sense of humor nevertheless, a gentlemen to those who intrigued him. And you most certainly were.
"We will see each other around the palace, I suppose. Good evening, Miss y/n" he smiled one last time before sharply turning, striding towards the queen. You hadn't noticed all the interested looks your dance provoked instead you couldn't help yourself but gaze after the prince with his signature forest green cloak.
"Mylady" prince Thor’s voice pulled you back into reality your respectful curtsy was quick to follow. If he was near you, the kings eyes mustn’t be farther and they were strict, merciless in their chiding nature. A scandal was to be avoided.
"My prince" you greeted him politely. He was well-mannered and handsome as well but there was something about his brother he lacked. But who were you to criticize the crown prince, who was surely interested in you. The scenario many debutantes and their mothers would cold-heartedly fail a swoon for.
But deep down you knew you craved something else and he did, too. A cursed combination bound to end up in the traditional image of a starchily marriage however, the high society’s expectations were weighing on you. And nothing less than your family’s glory, your future and most importantly your life depended on the decisions you were making.
"I would be honored if you joined me for a promenade through the palace gardens tomorrow" he asked, gently taking your hand and holding it up high for everyone else to see. He was indicating his interest in courting you making your mother boast under the jealous looks of your numerous concurrence.
She was happy but would you be, too after this season was over?
💎💎💎
After the promenade with prince Thor which was admittedly pleasing yet quite uneventful you received many noblemen which turned out to be just like prince Loki had described them so shamelessly honest. You had darted surreptitious glances at the younger prince while wandering with Thor listening to stories of cruel battlefields and telling him all the things your mother had advised you to, all the things which were required for a fine young woman; playing the piano, crafting flowery stitcheries and how much you adored children.
There was nothing really wrong about Thor and since becoming a princess would bring you and your family incredible glory along with a secured future, you gave your best to present your most ladylike self.
But at night, when you were alone your thoughts were ghosting around his regal brother, the quick-witted, handsome gentlemen and the only man to ever make your flawless facade of cautious respectfulness crumble in public. Maybe you would find someone like him instead of marrying the crown prince? Maybe you could listen to your heart instead of jadedly following the tradition?
"Y/N! Read what Lady Camille has written!" Your mother suddenly exclaimed making you hurry to the dining room. "Whatever could it be?" You asked starting to get worried if you may have made a mistake. Or worse; caused the first scandal?
"She has praised you, dear. You and the crown prince would be the 'the most beloved couple of the ton' she wrote" your mother rhapsodized bathing in the compliment of the Lady no one knew yet everyone believed. But then her face darkened as she took your hand squeezing it tightly.
“The princess will arrive tomorrow. You must make haste buttering up the prince or he slips through the fingers of the jewel! Imagine the scandal if this graceless princess takes him from you“...
