I love that Royal Mail is not only promoting the work of humanitarians in history, but they remembered to include women as well! Josephine Butler is one of my favourite women in history, but is unlikely to ever appear on a bank note. She campaigned against the Contagious Diseases Act, which effectively blamed the spread of STDs on prostitutes, completely ignoring their clientele. After she heard about the women who were being humiliated and degraded by this Act, including one woman who committed suicide, Butler began her campaign to have it revoked. She scandalised Victorian society by openly talking about sex and prostitution, but the stories she recounted from the women she spoke to often reduced crowds to tears.
