There are 15 crane species worldwide, and 12 are endangered. North America contains the most populous species, the Sandhill crane, and the most rare, the Whooping crane, with less than 500 birds remaining in the wild. Both species converge in Nebraska each spring. Cranes need healthy rivers, grasslands, and wetlands to survive, and so do we. Rowe Sanctuary’s Crane CamAbout: The Lillian Annette Rowe Sanctuary was established in 1974 by the National Audubon Society. Audubon's vision is to protect and increase essential habitat for cranes, least terns and piping plovers on the Platte River. Mission: To conserve Platte River ecosystems for cranes and other wildlife through conservation and education. Description: Rowe Sanctuary protects and manages over 2,300 acres and five miles of River channel. Established in 1974 the Sanctuary was the first land protected for sandhill cranes on the Platte River. It has been designated as a Globally Important Bird Area, part of an international effort to protect the world's most important sites for birds.
