Ten minutes before
You watch Rome leave and a sigh escapes your lips. You don’t mind Rome leaving but you wished that he would tell you what was wrong.
Draco and Omulous come out of the kitchen, talking amongst themselves. You didn’t want to be rude so you waited until there was a lull in the conversation to ask about breakfast.
“There’s a wolf in our backyard.” Draco spoke.
“That’s just Rome. He needed to be outside.” You said.
“I hope he doesn’t relieve himself on the lawn.”
You then realized what was wrong. It was Draco. He didn’t like Rome and you couldn’t understand why he didn’t like him. You were happy with Rome and maybe that was the problem.
“What’s your problem with Rome?”
He looks at you, a bit surprised but you were fed up with his attitude. If he didn’t want Rome here, you’d go with him. That’s how it worked.
“I don’t have a problem with Rome.”
“Yes, you do. You’re speaking poorly about him and by the way you look at him, you hate him.”
He sighed and Omulous put a plate of food in front of you. You smiled at her.
“Thank you.”
“You don’t like him, Draco. Just admit it.” Omulous spoke up
“Omulous, this doesn’t concern you.”
“I’m your wife, so yes, it does concern me.”
You felt like shrinking into the chair to disappear from the world. This turned from talking about Rome to talking about their relationship that you figured was taking a hit.
You almost blamed yourself because you knew that they were happy before you came into their lives and brought Rome, who brought more problems.
“Look. If you want me gone, then I’ll just go.” You spoke up, letting their conversation halt.
“You don’t have to. Draco can just suck it up.” Omulous spoke a bit bitterly.
“How do I know that this child you’re carrying is mine?” He replied harshly.
You watched the emotions run across Omulous’s face in a wave. Confusion, rage and then sadness. You could see the tears brim in her eyes and you knew that he had gone too far.
You watched his own face soften, and what he had said finally hit.
“Omulous-”
She slapped him, hard, and you were shocked. The tears came from her and she left the room. You didn’t want to voice your option on if he actually deserved it but what he said was uncalled for.
“You’re lucky to have her in your life. You get everything you want. A nice house, plenty of money, and now a child on the way. What more could you want?”
Tears brim in your eyes now because you don’t have a perfect life, you ever would. But you had Rome and that was all that you could ever want and you felt sorry for Draco.
“You have everything and yet you have nothing. You don’t ever want to know the pain I went through. If you capiscimi, and the pain I went through, maybe you’d be grateful for what you have.”
You don’t feel hungry anymore and you turn away from Draco. He’s toxic, as he always had been, as he always would be. It just took you too long to realize it.
—-
You go outside to be alone and you see Rome with Omulous. You don’t mind. Rome always had a big heart and he always cared for people who needed comfort. You smiled and wished that in the future you would be lucky enough to have a child with him.
He leads her back inside and you exhale the fresh air. Your peace is short lived when you hear yelling coming from inside the manor, prompting you to race back inside.
Rome is back in human form, with a pair of pants and he’s blocking Draco from going upstairs, where you suspect Omulous is.
“Leave her alone.” Rome growls.
“Out of my way. She is my wife.”
“Then start acting like it!” Rome roars and you jump a little.
You know that it’s not his fault for acting out so irrationally because of the full moon. But you’re a bit scared as to what he could do to Draco.
“Rome.” You speak, gently.
He looks at you and you notice how his body relaxes. He growls a bit at Draco but does move to the side. Rome comes to your side and holds you close to him.
“We need to leave. I can’t be here anymore. We shouldn’t have come.” You whisper to him.
You two go upstairs and pack your belongings. You were quick to get dressed, not bothering to shower until you got to a hotel. Rome takes the bags downstairs and you both reach the door.
“Where are you going?” Draco asks.
You turn to look at him and you feel Rome tense beside you, adding to the already tense mood that’s suffocating you. It had been that way ever since you set foot in the manor.
“Leaving. We’ve overstayed our welcome.” You say smoothly.
“You don’t have to leave.”
“Yes, we do.”
Rome opens the door and you step forward slightly to let him through. You’re highly aware of how Draco is looking at you, begging you with his eyes to stay. You don’t give in, not anymore.
There was a time that the look he’s giving you now would have worked. But the time has passed since you were at Hogwarts and you know that now is the time to be forgetting about Hogwarts, to forget about him.
You follow Rome outside and Draco follows, a bit too closely, which causes Rome to growl. He place a hand on your arm, causing you to stop and look at him.
“Let go of me, Draco.”
“Stay, please.”
There’s something unspoken behind his eyes and you are afraid of what it is. You don’t want to know but you know that whatever it is, it will not cause your heart to long for Draco again. You belonged with Rome.
“Get your hand off her.” Rome growls again.
His grip on you tightens and it doesn’t escape you.
“Draco, let go of me. Don’t make things worse.”
You see Omulous stand at the top of the stairs that lead into the manor and you don’t miss her wand in her hand. Her bags are packed too.
“I can’t let you go.”
“Let her go.” Rome speaks again, but louder.
“I love you.”
You had been waiting all your life to hear this words escape from hid mouth and now they didn’t have any effect on you, except sadness.
Omulous loved him deeply and you could see the shock on her face. She held onto her wand a bit more tightly.
“Draco, I’m in love with Rome. I’m going to marry him someday. Please, let me go.” You plead.
Those words are like a slap in the face to him and he lets go of you. Rome immediately has you by his side and is leading you away from the manor, away from the madness that has consumed Draco.
“I’m going to marry you, Rome.”
“I know. I love you.”
“I love you-”
It only takes a second to unfold and in that second, Rome blocks the spell that was meant for you, the spell that killed. One second was all it took for your life to fade away into nothing.
You felt his weight topple against you and you fall to the gravel of the driveway. You quickly get out from underneath him and take in his face, the face of death.
There’s no noise surrounding you, there’s just the emptiness of death surrounding you and the tears flow freely. You clutch his shirt tightly and you cry into his chest, saying his name over and over until you become too chocked up the tears to say anything else.
He’s gone and you’re doing all you can to keep a grip on your sanity. The man who saved you, who fixed your heart to beat again, was gone and all it took was a second.
You want to scream into the light of the morning until you can’t scream anymore. You want everyone to know what’s happened and how Draco Malfoy has murdered the man you love.
You’ll never see his smiling face again, hear him laugh, get to be lost in his arms again. It’s gone.
“(Y/N), come with me.” You hear Omulous say.
You can’t get yourself to look at her because he’s dead, he’s dead and you can’t look away.
“(Y/N). Come on. Let’s go take care of his body.”
You then listen as the sounds slowly come back into focus around you. The birds are still tweeting and there’s a soft rumble of an engine behind you.
You get off of Rome’s chest and kiss his cold lips once more. He’s gone.
Omulous helps you to place his body in the backseat of the car and you notice that Draco’s body is lying, face first, on the gravel. You want to ask but you can’t conjure up any words.
“He’s not dead. I stunned him. I also called the police. They’ll take care of him.”
She helps you into the passengers side of the car, and she notices that you have the necklace that he was wearing clutched in your hands.
“He loved you. It was just too much for him.”
You listen to the gravel crunch under the tires of the car as Omulous drives away from the manor and you inhale the traced of Rome’s cologne as it surrounds you, comforting you.
“I’ll always love you, even in death.”
You smile, just slightly, and the tears come again. But these are happy tears. He’s in a better place now and soon you’ll see him again.
