~The Next Morning~

“Welcome Peta, I’m Doctor Wood. I’ve been meeting with Maks for a week now. We’ve been discussing somethings that are stressful for him.”

“What’s stressful babe?” She turned and asked Maks.

“A lot of things, me just getting Lizzie back as my PR, still not finding great jobs or one great job, family drama, and our relationship.” He explained.

“What’s wrong with our relationship?”

“P we don’t see eye to eye a lot, all this is very hard. I need to focus on me right now.”

“But babe we’re getting married.”

He was quite.

“Aren’t we?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m gonna give you two a minute to talk about your feelings. I’ll be right back in a few minutes.”

Dr. Wood walked out of the room.

“Maks please explain to me what you are feeling.” Peta said.

“You know I care about you so much, and you know I would never want to hurt you.” He began.

“Uh huh…”

“You know that I want you to be happy but i also want to be happy.”

“Maks where are you going with this?” She asked.

“I love you but I’m not in love with you. You mean a lot to me but we can’t be in a relationship.”

“Are you not happy?”

“I just need to figure myself out. I’m having issues I need to deal with and they’re driving me insane.”

“So what are we gonna call everything off?”

“It’s what’s best for both of us P trust me.”

“Ok I guess if this is what you want.”

“I want to be friends. No bad blood between us.”

“I can’t believe this is happening.”

“You need someone to make you happy. I can’t make you happy if I’m not happy. Please I don’t want this to be harder than it has to.”

“Ok.”

They hugged.

“I’m always here for you no matter what P, this is just something I need to do.”

“I understand, and I’m here for you too.”

A few minutes later Dr. Wood walked back in.

“Where did Peta go?” She asked.

“She left.”

“So is everything ok?”

“Yes we spoke and we’re gonna be friends.”

“Wow I’m very proud of you Maks.”

“Thank you Dr. Wood. So what’s next?”

“Well while I left earlier I called Lizzie and we spoke about what you’re interested in career wise, and she said she’ll get to work on that.”

“Really? That’s fantastic news.” Maks smiled.

“So I should be asking you Maks. What’s next?”

“Well if my career is being all taken care of and I finally got to speak with Peta and my parents there’s only one thing left to do.”

Maks held her closer to him.

“This is like a dream,being able to hold you this close again. I don’t want to wake up.” Maks whispered,

“I know only that this isn’t our reality, this isn’t a dream either, but it’s a beautiful nightmare.”

They finished the night off with Maks driving Meryl to get hotel.

“Meryl I know you’re leaving tomorrow but I meant what I said earlier. I’m gonna fix everything.” Maks said.

“Focus on you Maks just you. Once you know what you want let me know, either way I’m here for you.”

Maks made his way home to find a surprise waiting for him at his front door.

“Peta?”

“Maks you went out with Meryl tonight?”

“What?”

“Don’t play with me. Did you?”

“Yes I did, how did you know?”

“I heard the voicemail you left for Val. Why did you go out with her? That’s cheating.”

“No it’s not Peta we didn’t do anything it was all apart of an exercise for therapy.”

“You go to therapy now?” She asked.

“You see maybe if you listened to me when I spoke to you.”

“Oh no don’t turn this on me, you still went out with her tonight.”

“Peta please”

“Maks I love you.” She began to cry.

“Don’t cry it wasn’t like that. I love you too.”

“The day you came out to LA, the day I broke it off, I regret everything. I should have never done it that way.”

“So you regret the way you broke up with me?”

“I regret breaking up with you in general. I didn’t work with you enough to fix our relationship before it got to this point.”

“Go on.” Meryl said.

“I was being selfish, I was being needy and I wasn’t thinking about your feelings.”

“Maks I wanted to work it out, I’m the one who did most of the traveling. You only came to visit me twice. I’m sorry that I was so busy.”

“Meryl I don’t need your sarcasm.”

“Oh really?”

“I don’t want to argue please.”

“So then what Maks. Tell me how you feel.” She yelled.

“I screwed up ok.” He yelled back.

“I screwed up and I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I love you.”

“But you love her too.” Meryl whispered.

“I felt pressured, like I had to do something with myself to please others but I’m the one who isn’t being pleased. I caused that. I did that to myself and I can’t blame anyone but myself.”

“I made a mistake when I said I love you. I love Peta, but I’m in love with you.”

At this point Meryl was crying.

“Tell me how you feel Meryl.”

Nothing.

“Meryl please.”

“I’m in love with you too. I always have been and always will be, but we can’t do anything about it. You’re gonna live your life with someone you already made a commitment to.”

“I’m gonna work on it Meryl I promise.”

“Maks talk is cheap, actions speak louder than words. Don’t tell me show me.” She said.

“I know the engagement hurt you. If it were reversed I’d be crushed if someone proposed to you in front of me. I want to work on us Meryl, if you’re willing to do the same.”

“As friends or something else?”

“Whatever you want.”

“Don’t let me make that decision for you. You need to do what you feel is right. I’ve learned to move on but I will always love you.”

“Give me time Meryl and I will make this right.”

“Ok.”

The night went on in peace. Meryl and Maks felt better now that they got all that off their chests. They laughed and joked with each other.

“Do you hear that song?” Meryl asked.

“Yeah.” He said.

“That’s the song Jenna is choreographing the skaters routine to.”

“Well you know it’s been a while since we last danced.”

“What are you imposing maksim?” Meryl smiled.

Maks stood up.

“May I have this dance?”

Dr. Wood showed up at the docs in San Diego waiting for Meryl and Maks to arrive. To her surprise they showed up together, only Meryl was blind folded and Maks was guiding her.

“Maks where are we?”

“Meryl that was the fifth time you asked, I told you it’s a surprise.” He laughed.

“Well make sure I don’t fall.”

“I won’t I got you, I promise.”

Dr. Wood couldn’t help but smile at the sight in front of her.

Maks guided Meryl onto the docs and waited for a few minutes.

“Hello Dr. Wood.” He said.

“Hello Maks, hello Meryl.”

“Hi Dr. Wood, nice to see you, well actually I can’t see you but you know what I mean.”

They all laughed.

“Are you ready for your date?” She asked.

“I think so.” “Ok well now I can finally remove the blindfolds from your eyes.” Said Maks untying the blindfold.

“Oh my gosh Maks!” Meryl was in complete shock.

He surprised her with dinner on a fancy boat.

“Wow very impressive Maks.” Dr. Wood said.

“This takes me back to our first date.” Meryl smiled.

“You’re correct.” Maks said.

Dr. Wood just watched the magic between the two not wanting to interrupt but she had to.

“Alright I’ll be waiting on the boat if you need me.” She said.

“Let’s all go in.” Meryl added.

The music was playing low, the food smelled delicious, and the waiters handed each of them a glass of champagne. Dr. Wood sat at a table at the far right on the deck, while Meryl and Maks sat at the center of the deck.

The waiters walked over to them and served their food as Dr. Wood observed.

“So this is very nice of you, I was just expecting dinner then a walk in the park like usual but I guess I was wrong.”

“That’s typical Meryl, I wanted to go all out and I’m surprised that you’re surprised.”

“Maks you’re engaged I wouldn’t expect any engaged man to go through the trouble to set up a "date” on a boat for his friend.“

Maks sighed.

"Can we not talk about the engagement please.” He was angry.

“Excuse me this is what we’re supposed to talk about.”

“No we’re supposed to talk about us.”

“Fine we will as soon as I get back from the restroom.” Meryl said as she got up and walked to the bathroom.

Dr. Wood walked towards Maks.

“Why are you avoiding the engagement conversation?” She asked.

“It’s not about us.”

“Well clearly it is if she keeps bringing it up. I told you talk about things you want to fix in your relationship with her, she’s obviously hurt about the engagement. Talk about it with her, hear her out.”

Then she got up and walked back to her table. Meryl returned and sat down.

“So Meryl, Maks has been coming to me for about a week now. He’s here because he wants to find himself some sense of direction and on who he wants to be.” Dr. Wood explained.

“Ok.”

“We’ve talked about career paths, relationships, and family. Three things that have all brought him stress, which have led him into depression.” She continued.

“Ok.”

“So I wanted to bring you here so we can talk about our relationship.” Maks added.

“What relationship Maks? We don’t have one.” Meryl told him.

“That’s his point Meryl, he wants to work on whatever it is happened and he wants to make things right. If you please I’d like to hear your side of the story.”

Meryl sighed.

“There’s really not much to tell.” She started to choke up.

Dr. Wood handed her tissues.

“I loved him and we were together for a year. Then one day I went to LA to see him and everything was going great. We had breakfast at his place, we went for a drive to the beach and walked for a bit, we talked. Then around lunch time he took me to one of our favorite spots and we sat down and he just said those four little words.”

“What were they Meryl?” Dr. Wood asked.

“I can’t do this.” Maks whispered.

“What Maks? ” she asked.

“Those were the four words.”

He looked over to his right to see the woman he truly loves with red puffy eyes and her cheeks stained with her tears. He caused them.

“Meryl is it true that you have a boyfriend?” Dr. Wood asked.

“I had a boyfriend for a while yes, but I broke up with him a while ago.”

“Why?”

“I just thought he and I should be friends.”

“Was there any other reason?”

“No.” Meryl said simply.

“Don’t lie Meryl.” Maks said.

“What?” She turned to face him.

“I know the reason you broke up with him was because you’re still in love with me.”

“Not true.”

“Yes it is.”

“Well it doesn’t matter because you’re in love with P-”

“No I’m not.”

“But you’re engaged.”

“Which was wrong to do to you, to her, but most Importantly to myself. I was busy trying to please everyone that I wasn’t pleasing myself and I made things worse for everyone.”

“Then you need to figure it all out with your fiancée.”

“I need to figure us out first.” Maks said grabbing her hand.

“Well then here’s your next exercise Maks, and Meryl you can take part in this. Tonight you two will go on a date. I will be observing it and you will just talk it out it. Your wants, your needs, everything needs to be all out in the table tonight.”

“How does that sound?” Dr. Wood asked.

Maks turned to Meryl still holding her hand.

“Will you go on a date with me tonight?” He asked as he looked deep in her eyes.

~After Dinner~

All four of them took a walk through a nearby park all the way to the board walk.

Val and Jenna walked ahead leaving Meryl and Maks alone. After a few moments of silence Maks finally had the courage to talk to her again.

“I’m really sorry about what I said in the restaurant.”

“It’s ok Maks.”

“No it’s not, I shouldn’t have brought up that conversation.”

She didn’t say a word.

“I don’t want to hide anything from you Meryl. You’ve always gotten the best from me and you always will.”

“I don’t think that can happen anymore.”

“Things aren’t going right with Peta and I. I love her but our relationship isn’t going were I expected it to go.”

“I’m sorry to hear that Maks.”

“I’m going to therapy. I need to figure myself out, and figure out what it is I want. It took me a long time to realize that I needed help and I’m sorry for everything I put you through and continue to put you through. I swear to you that stops now.”

“What are you going to do?” She asked him, tears falling from her eyes.

“Come to therapy with me tomorrow. I know you’re here for another two days just come with me and let’s at least try to work on us.”

“How? What about her?”

“I’ll figure it out with Peta later. I just want to take the time you and I have now to fix everything between us.”

“As friends?”

“If that’s what you want”

“I don’t know what I want anymore Maks, I’ll think about it.”

~Next day~

“So Maks do you know if she’s coming or not?” Asked Dr. Wood.

“I’m not sure, she’s not answering my phone calls.”

“I guess we should just start your next exercise then.” She insisted.

Just then there was a knock at the door.

“Come in.”

It was Dr. Wood’s receptionist.

“I’m sorry to interrupt but I have a Meryl Davis here, she says she’s supposed to be joining your session today.”

“Yes bring her in. Thank you.” Dr. Wood smiled.

Maks’ heart started to race. She’s here, she actually came. Meryl walked in and she looked beautiful.

“Hello Meryl my name I’m Dr. Wood.”

“Hello, nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too, please have a seat next to Maks.”

Meryl greeted him with a light kiss on the cheek then sat down.

~Later on that night~

Jenna and Meryl walked into the restaurant and found Maks and Val waiting for them.

“What are you guys doing here?” Meryl asked.

“We overheard Jenna make the reservation so we came.” Val explained.

Maks once again was frozen staring at Meryl.

“I’m gonna go to the bathroom, Jenna can you come with me?”

“Yes of course Mer.”

Meryl rushed Jenna in.

“What is Maks doing here?”

“They just told us Meryl.”

“Yeah but still. You should of been more quite.”

“What do you mean it’s not my fault.” Jenna argued.

“Ok, ok you’re right. I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok I know this is hard for you.”

“That’s why I had to leave earlier. Just seeing him in the room made me emotional.”

“I understand. Do you want to go somewhere else for dinner?” Jenna asked.

“No it’s ok I don’t want him to think something is up, I’ll try to keep it together.”

The girls sat back at the table.

“So you both look very beautiful tonight.” Val complemented.

“Thank you babe.” Jenna smiled.

“Thank you Val. You both look very handsome as well.” Meryl said.

Val smiled, Maks still staring didn’t even move.

The waiter walked over to take their orders. They started off with glasses of wine.

“So Meryl how’s the program going?” Val asked.

“Really good, thank god for Jenna helping us out last minute. The other skaters were freaking out if we didn’t find a new choreographer in time.”

“Wow that’s good that she showed up.” He agreed.

“So how have you both been?” Meryl asked.

“I’m very good thank you. I’m excited to start this season of dwts. Ginger has been amazing so far.”

“That’s really good, you know I’m always rooting for you Val. And how are you Maks?”

“I, uh, I’m good.”

“That’s nice to hear.”

“Yeah and how are you?” He asked.

“I’m doing well, I’m going on vacation after my next show.”

“That’s nice, where are you going?”

“Paris.”

“Oh, I get it city of love, you must be going with your boyfriend.”

“Bro.” Said Val

“No it’s ok Val.” Meryl said.

“Well Maks, fedor and I actually broke up. Well I broke up with him.”

Now he feels stupid.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered.

“It’s fine like I said I broke up with him.”

“Why? If you don’t mind me asking.”

“I-we, I just thought we’d be better off as friends.”

Maks nodded his head in understanding.

“So how are things with you and Peta?”

“Good.”

No that’s not what he wanted to say.

“That’s really great Maks, I’m so happy for you both.”

He can see her eyes getting watery.

“Meryl-”

Jenna paused the music.

“Jenna you said your mom was in town.” Val said.

“Uh yeah about that”

Maks’ eyes were glued on Meryl

“Hi Val nice to see you.” Meryl greeted him.

“Hi Meryl, I’m sorry I, Jenna didn’t tell me you’d be here.”

“No it’s ok.” She smiled softly.

She walked over to Maks.

“Hi Maks.”

He didn’t say anything he just continued to stare at her.

“Ok well I’m gonna go, uh Jen I’ll see you tonight.”

“See you later Meryl.” She said.

Maks was frozen. Did that just happen? Is she really here?

“I’m going to the bathroom.” Maks said.

He went to put cold water on his face. He pulled out his phone and texted Dr. Wood.

Maks: hey I’m sorry but I need to have today’s session earlier than noon.

Dr. Wood: sure, what time?

Maks: How about in ten minutes?

Dr. Wood : Wow! Yes Maks you can come now.

“Maks: Thank you.

Maks arrived at Dr. Woods office all sweaty and out of breath.

"Maks did you run here?” She joked.

“No…I’m just…I can’t… She’s…” He rambled.

“Sit Maks here’s some water, now relax.”

He did what he was told and began speaking.

“Meryl is in town.”

“Is she really?”

“Yes she was just at Jenna’s and I saw her, and she talked to me. I couldn’t say anything because I was in shock. I’m so stupid why didn’t I say anything back?”

“Maks breath. Remember your first exercise? Don’t get yourself worked up.”

He drank more water and calmed down a little.

“Now what did she say to you when she saw you?” Dr. Wood asked.

“She said Hi.”

“That’s it?”

“Yes. Please help me what do I do?”

“Nothing.” She said simply.

“You’re kidding me right?”

“No I’m serious. What is there you can do?” She asked him.

“I can talk to her about our situations and where we stand with each other. I mean she’s here I should take advantage of this time.”

“Maks what would make this time different than any other time? You would still have to deal with the issues Peta and Meryl have with each other.”

“True but Peta is traveling with her partner right now, that would give me time to talk Meryl. What if we do a therapy session and have her come in?” He suggested.

“If she’s up for it I’m willing to do it.”

“I’ll talk to her, I’ll try to convince her.”

“Just out of curiosity how are you gonna do that? You could barely speak to her earlier remember?”
