Ross's goose has black wingtips, a short neck and is the smallest of North American geese. Numbers have increased as a result of conservation measures. Bernard Ross was the first to discover the arctic nesting grounds of these geese in 1940. First batch of pictures from today's trip to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. This place is vast, and at the limit of my entry-level camera (and skill). But it is absolutely loaded with birds, mostly of the aquatic variety. So many Canada Geese, but it's strange and different seeing them in a natural setting, rather than cluttering up a parking lot or soccer field. The white goose is a Ross' Goose, I was told, a rare visitor to this place. I can't identify most of the ducks.
