Corruption… If Only...

This quote reveal many truth we have in our society. Like, how numerous artist are afraid to express themselves. Celebrities, with all their wealth, are slaves to their fans. Scientist bound by what humane and what’s not. But the man who spoke this message decided to make a world undersea, and to him it was perfect. The perfect world he call Rapture didn’t last long, for the weak took advantage of it. Leaving this creator in shattered, he changes it. Asking an interesting question of what choices would we make if our lives were on the line. Would we kill other innocent lives, sacrifice our humanity.

Playing the video, we start from the surface looking at the beautiful horizon. Slowly shifting toward the ocean, the narration begins. As we dive, deeper and deeper, we see a city. It reminds me of New York because all of the neon signs, the building sort of remind me of the city that near the statue of liberty. Having our little tour of the city , it eventually leads us into a building. We see a man walking across a hallway, and we start to see from his perspective. The act we witness is walking up to a strange wall with a hole. As we walk up to it, we see a small girl. The girl screams and tries to go back in into the hole, but we grab her. Then the man proceeds to pull out a… wait… a wrench… uh… it seems like he going to hit her with it. Then we hear an echoey cry, so we turn around. To see an awesome giant fat armored scuba diver. The creature has a drill instead of a right hand, an oxygen tank on his back, and fairly tall. The creature attacks us, and clearly this armored titan has the advantage. Throw us around like a baby throwing his toys. As this battle escalates, we see this man sacrificing a lot to survive: trying to stop the drill by blocking with his hand, injecting himself with an weird serum that made him have a hive inside his arm, and even trying to hit this monster with a tiny wrench. The man win the fight, only to be surprised by same, but different, monster. The last scene show the girl crying, as the huge shadow covers her. A hand is reach out for the girl, and she takes it.

Thinking from what trailer showed us, the first thing that came to mind was, why did the man try to kill a young girl? Clearly the man was desperate to find and kill her. What was that serum that he injected himself with? That changed his arm into a hive like object! Of course there’s more questions but only some many that can be answered from this trailer. I talked with a friend I had in the video game club here in Art Center, and he explained the basics of what happened in the the game. There was this plane crash, in the middle of the ocean, and by some miracle the MC (Main Character) was the sole survivor. He find Rapture because of the incident, but little does he know about the dangers of the this place. For it is filled with people who became insane, because of the amount of serum they injected themselves with. The serum was invented by the man who made rapture, and it’s capable of literally changing how your body works. Then the little girls, apparently they play a huge part in serum power thing. If you were to kill the girl, you can enhance your powers. There are many of these small girls. In this world they are known as “Little Sister. As for the Giant Titan, it is known as “Daddy”. This character sole purpose is to protect the “Little Sister” from the who dare attempt bring harm to them.

Help

Who is Marla Singer? What is her role? Why is she so important to the plot? She is the main character’s wake up call. Throughout the whole movie she, in every scene we see her, is the one that snap tyler back to “reality”. Whenever she makes contact with tyler, she is the only one that makes the main character think. Marla is definitely my favorite character in this movie. She is the only character that shows a real human side. She just lives life as she can: she steals food and clothes. But she also tries to talk to the main character: confronting him and tries to understanding him.

Let’s start with how she is Tyler’s wake up call. In the beginning when tyler went to the interventions, he felt good about going to them because it helped him go to sleep.. But when Marla showed up, Tyler started to feel the guilty about being a faker and stopped going to them. She always seems to act like Tyler’s conscience. On the last intervention they meet tyler confronts marla about her being a faker, but she calmly replies that she knows the tyler is a fake too. She even told the reason why going to intervention helps her. “When people think you’re dying, they really listen to you instead of… waiting for their turn to speak”. She is very honest, and tell tyler a lot of interesting thing around the idea of being abandoned. “A condom is the glass slipper of our generation. You slip one on when you meet a stranger. You dance all night. Then, you throw it away ... the condom, I mean, not the stranger”. I understood what this meant after watching the whole movie. Why would she say the last part? I felt like this quote, when she was talking to the narrator, was meant to tell him that she not just something to throw away.

She helps Tyler rethink his choices, but she also somewhat mental support. When she goes to tyler home, she sees tyler’s burnt hand and asks if he’s okay. The talk they had tyler’s after tyler realized that he had two side, she attempts to talk and listen to what he has to say. She shows how much she cares for tyler by saying,“You have deep-seated emotional problems for which you should seek professional help!” Even though it ended up with her saying,”You're the worst thing that ever happened to me”.She was even kidnapped, was forced to go into a building, and yells at tyler,but once she sees tyler shot wound she immediately get concerns.

Feminism

So I decided to do my blog on “Bad Blood”. I first wanted to do “He Belongs to Me”, but I didn’t know if the song would fit in the Postmodernism and Post-Feminism category. Back to the topic, “Bad Blood”, by Taylor Swift, was a music video with cool agent(?) preparing for a battle. The video starts with Taylor and Selena fighting a bunch of minion. When taylor get the item they need, selena betrays her and kicks her out of the building. Then taylor preps for her next fight with selena by training with her crew.

The Whole idea of using women for agent is good example of Feminism. Usually, men are displayed as that figure. An example would be James Bond, Mission Impossible, and Jason Bourne. Using women to display as a badass (sorry for language) spy is not the usual way of showing equally between men and women, but in my opinion it works. Even though women, in these kinds of movie or music video, are seen as the damsel in distress or the emotional figure, they can make it work. In the music video, they did a good job in making the people in the music video look strong. The cool fight scene in the beginning of the music video. Giving straight looks, without emotions. They all dress up in black, which is a pretty dominion color. They even used to badass(sorry again) slow walk behind an explosion. The explosion scene has been used alot of times like Wolverine, spy movies, and anime too.

Despite all of what we saw from the music let talk about what we heard. From what i see in the lyrics It feels like it comes from a break up, or some kind of betrayal. She talks about how her”Bad Blood” used to be “Mad Love”. In the Bridges of her songs, she always brings up how the holes “she” made will heal but won’t. So from what I hear from what she sings, I believe that this is an exaggerated idea of a fight between friends. Like boyfriend is cheating on you with your best friend, friend got you in deep trouble or humiliated you

Another good example would be what Rosette showed me in class. Jessica Jones is a T.V show that comes from comic that originally from Marvel. Jessica Jones is a “investigator“ of her own Alias Private Investigations. Her character in the episode Rosette showed us, was isolated, sassy, and surprisingly sensitive. During the episode, she shows signs of fear and weakness. This would usually make the audience disconnect from her because heroes are suppose to be strong, but this part of her story makes her more intriguing. She not only a character that weeps, her sarcastic side is also great. She makes a “threat” about her “laser eyes” and next you know an adult goes to the court and tries to sue. What i'm trying to say here is that these badass figures doesn’t always have to look invincible, giving the hero a soft spot may give an opportunity, for the audience, to build a kind of a character development.

My Understanding of Remix

Remix, the idea of mixing ideas, has been popular ever since the beginning of 1940s and 1950s. To make a remix one must take, transform, and combine clips they use. Memes are a perfect example, they are either picture with a quote, or a video that has edited clips.

So as the assignment told mei have to add analyze to the formula. Analyzing would be to an important part to the formula mostly because you can’t just add random clips together and expect it to have meaning. To analyze is to examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of information , typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.

For my chosen video, I chose a manga reading channel on youtube. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wiear2Tuies&t=2s)(here’s the links! (/0u0/) This was posted by Edward Davis, on August 2017. So sum up what happens in the video, the main character, Midoriya Izuku is searching for a kid named Kouta. (Kouta ran away after claiming he hates the whole idea of hero. His parents were heroes, but they died on duty) SoKouta is walking on the mountain, after he ran away. He finds a stranger in dark clothing. Following his instinct, he ran as fast as he could, only for the stranger to catch up to him. Then it shows a flashback of kouta’s parents. He reveals his face, and it ends up to be the guy who killed Kouta’s parents (Each person has a power, and the killer has the power to make muscle). Before the killer could get Kouta, Midoriya saves him last second. Midoriya sees Kouta crying and says he will save him. Midoriya and the killer have a talk, only for it to end up into a fight. Midoriya is attempting to fight with the killer, but he can’t out run or damage the killer. Then there’s more action. Then izuku ends up dealing so damage to the Killer. Killer reveals his true strength and the atmosphere completely changes. Izuku screams at Kouta to grab his back, the next second the Killer completely destroys where izuku was standing. Seeing the overwhelming gap between himself and the Killer, he thinks about running back to camp to where his teacher is. But he realizes that he is too slow, he exhausted from training camp and has to protect kouta. So he ends up deciding to stay behind so Kouta could escape. The killer at this point looks like a big blob of muscle, but he crazy strong and fast. Izuku and Killer have a stand-off in strength and the killer is slowly winning. Kouta comes back and shoot a weak beam of water at the killer. The killer gets distracted, and izuku brings out one million percent(not joking) his strength and defeats the villain.

The reason why I explain the video wasn’t so i could fill out the word count (XD), but to explain how the publisher changer the manga. So usually manga is for reading, not watching. What this youtuber did he took images of the manga and edited them so the audience could see scenes more easily and added many different anime music to really create the mood of that particular scene. So Like in the beginning, they put a menacing song from hunter x hunter, Meruem Theme, and while the enemy is attacking, they but the aizen’s (I think) theme from bleach. He would even zoom in and out to add in a dramatic feeling. In order to make this work the youtuber, Edward Davis, had observe and analyze the manga, see which part of the manga fits with a song, and when he should zoom in and out of it.

Annie

Annie, she is one of the first made champion in the league of legends video game. After 9 years they made an origin story based on her. They story starts with a beautiful view of the sky, as ashes are flying away. Next we see annie waking up and everything around her is destroyed. She wanders and finds, what seems like her mother, someone weeping asking her “Why?” We are drifted into a flashback of the that person we saw looking into annie’s wardrobe and found pictures of drawing of annie’s real mother. As she flips to page to page, we see that annie’s mom passed away and the father get married to another women, the one looking at the pictures, and annie wants to see her mother again. Now we see annie playing with someone in her room. Annie is playing her teddy bear “Tibbers”, but the girl playing with annie steal tibbers so that she can play with him. Annie chases after Daisy, she says her name while chasing her, and grabs tibbers legs which leads to a tug war. Annie get mad and ends up burning Daisy hand and she ends up crying. The Stepmother walks in and sees Daisy’s hands burnt, and pulls Daisy away from annie, seeing her as dangerous. The father walks in and comforts his daughter, as he trying to tell her that everything going to be okay, Annie smiles and the stepmother gets mad and leaves the room with daisy. Now the two girls are playing outside, and they see a butterfly. Amazed by its beauty they chase after the beautiful creature. Daisy runs ahead of annie, ignoring the danger of the rapidly running river. Annie is trying to warn Daisy, as she trying to carefully step on each stone right. Daisy ends up tripping and falls into the river. Just barely Daisy was able to latch onto tibbers, thanks to annie, and she tries to hold on. As Annie tries to bring Daisy back to her, her power starts manifests and ends up burning Daisy’s hands. Daisy lets go and she is dragged by the endless waters, into darkness. Annie is trying to look into her parent’s room, trying to hear what they’re saying. All she heard was that her stepmother called her a monster. Despite her father trying to defend her, annie flees into her room and cries. Like before, her power acts up and starts to burn the house. Annie's father realizes there’s a fire and he heads straight to annie’s room. He rescues her and tries to leave the house, but before they could exit the entrance is collapsing. Like a father, he throws annie to safety and sacrificed himself. Annie hits the floor and she blackouts. Now we are back to what we saw in the beginning, and the mother stands up angrily and blames her for everything. She tries to slap annie only to see her use Tibbers as protection. She hesitates, but she takes Tibbers and tries to rip it. Annie revolts and tries to take tibbers back, but the step mother pushes her away and throw tibbers on the ground. Annie power comes out completely, fire raging around her, trees burning, and tibbers transforms. The stepmother terrified as the bear gets bigger and bigger, and the scene goes black. Annie is left standing, in front of what left over of the stepmother. She looks at Tibbers, seeing it as her only friend, and stars to cry.

The whole clip was an example of post-modernization. The whole idea of a child unable to control her power until after the tragedy the conspires. The idea of the main character has a unique parent that passed away. The conflicts she has with her stepmother. The stepmother is an example of fear of the unknown. We see this in sci-fi and fantasy. Disney used this in “Frozen” and “Tangled”. Anime used this too

Shhh Be Quiet

I choose to observe the movie trailer of “A Quiet Place”, a horror film completely reliant on tension. Like in class, the first place I observed was the beginning. Its starts with a girl sleeping outside on broad daylight, waking up as if she woke up from a nightmare. She was wearing a yellow shirt, skirt with flower patterns. The setting was in a rural like area, seeing growing crops surrounding the girl. Another thing I found interesting is the that there is a lot of a sand making a path.The scene ends, showing us a message,“Listen Closely”. Then I think it the same girl, but wearing a blue jacket and jeans, walking up to a cross with some interesting squares on the bottom. The square might be picture or signs. Now they give us another message,” Move Carefully”. As i get here I realize that this trailer is very quiet, only hearing a distant music. A old man appears to pouring sand all over the floor, near his home. His home is a farm, but very wore out. You can see rust and plant are growing all over the house. Now the man, with a young boy, are now walking on that sand through the forest and they are even wearing hiking gear. “And Never Make A Sound”. I am now aware that these characters are trying to avoid or hide from something because usually you would want to quiet as possible when your being hunted. A women is shown hanging clothing, makes me think that she is a mother. We see someone entering the house, though it’s unclear who it is. Then they show a view of the staircase, and the wall is destroyed. “If they can’t hear you” is the next line they give out. Shows a family of four, all the people we saw earlier in the trailer, having dinner together and they communicate through sign language. They also only eat food that can’t make noise. “They can’t hunt you” gives me a red flag that they aren’t in a safe place. The children are playing a board game,” monopoly” and every piece is made from wool. They roll the dice into cloth so there no noise. The boy make is his move and the girl smiles. The boy excited, stretches his arm to only knock down the lantern they placed, makes a loud noise. The father takes out the fire and everyone is frozen. The father gets up and slowly walks up to the window to check on the lights. The mother seems to be very frightened, while the kids don’t know what's going on. The lights are shining a bright yellow color, only to turn into a red. Then the music is just drums, I think, slamming like doom doom! For each doom, there is a scene. The first was the mother hiding from the window, then there is a the father holding the son running into the forest. Then shows the girl on top of these stairs as if she going to walk down, only to be stopped by a shadowy figure. Now it’s nighttime, showing the boy running through the crop field with a lantern. Beside the boy there seems to be someone following him. I would think it would be the father, but he seems like he looking at death. Showing a terrified expression, he turns around to only run faster. Finally it shows the mother in a bathtub, with a light bulb above of her. She seems to be calm until the light bulb starts to flicker; she curls up scared. Knowing she can’t make noise, she only opens her mouth with a tears running through her face. Everything turns black and there is the title.
