It went on the same way for the next 6 months. My father increased his brutality over and over. He told me that I was growing beautiful by the day and he wants to enjoy every bit of my body. It irked me so much that I wanted to do things to my body, so it won’t attract him anymore.

In October 1984, my father got a loan of 10,000 rupees to purchase a land. I wanted to still run away after the first attempt and I had been saving money for the last 6 months. I had collected 200 rupees which was a very good amount back then to travel to another city. On 14th of October 1984, which was a Sunday, my father got really drunk and went off to sleep. That afternoon I stole the key of the locker and kept it handy. I slowly went into the room which had the locker. It was a room right beside my parents’ room. I held a lamp and walked into that room, I was able to open the locker without making any noise. I took 5,000 rupees from the locker and vanished from that place. I went into my room and blocked the door with a table. My father was worried that I would latch the door from inside and attempt to kill myself, so he got all the latches removed from the door of my room. I quickly counted the money and looked at the time. It was 10:30pm in the evening. I pushed the table able aside and walked towards the main door without making any noise. I opened the door very carefully.

For the last few days, whenever I had the free time, I practiced opening the door without any noise. I opened the door without any noise and ran towards the gate. I climbed on the wall and ran towards the main road. I ran for my life! I ran for my freedom!

I wasn’t carrying anything with me apart from the bundle of money which I wrapped in a cloth and tied around my waist. I covered it with my shirt. I waited for a while and got into an auto. I asked the auto guy to drop me to Nampally railway station which is about 15 kilometers from my home. I was wearing a stole to cover my face. Everything worked out so well, it was as if the angels helped me.
