10. "How was the cult meeting?" "For the last time, family dinner is not-â
The unlocking of a door interrupts RosĂ©âs tapping of laptop keys and she looks up as footsteps move through the entryway into the lounge.
âHeyâ Jan says as she sets her jacket down on a chair and starts to take off her shoes.
âHeyâ RosĂ© reflects, closing her laptop lid and setting it down on the coffee table in front of the couch. âHow was the cult meeting?"
"For the last time, family dinner is notâ â Jan huffs exasperatedly and cuts herself off. Not bothered to entertain the conversation theyâve had before, knowing that RosĂ© is more than willing to wind her up again.
âYou canât tell me that a coven assembling from all across the city on the night of a full moon is not a cult activityâ RosĂ© smirks.
âThat coven is my family and the full moon just happened to be by chanceâ Jan doesnât even know why she bothers to defend it anymore. âBut my perfectly normal family gathering was really boring. Thanks for asking.â
âNo rituals?â RosĂ© asks.
Jan suddenly throws a shoe at RosĂ© who laughs but manages to catch it before it hits her in the face. Then Jan has to admit, âwell, we did say grace.â
RosĂ©âs laughter dies down as she sets the shoe on the ground instead of throwing it back. âOkay, Iâll stop nowâ she relents. âDid they talk politics again?â
âMhmmâ Jan hums tiredly as she moves over to the couch, lying down and resting her head on RosĂ©âs legs. âAnd it was both fascinating and mind-numbingly stupid how traditional they still are.â
RosĂ© hums as she brings her hand to stroke through Janâs hair.
âYou should comeâ Jan says as she closes her eyes.
âGotta say, you didnât do the greatest job of selling thatâ RosĂ© points out.
âOh, come onâ Jan begs. âIf youâre there it wonât be so bad for me.â
âNo offense babyâ RosĂ© begins, âbut I donât think your family and I will agree on many things.â
âI donât agree with my family on many thingsâ Jan asserts. âYouâve already met them before anyway. And youâll need to get to know them better at some point.â
âOkay, fineâ RosĂ© gives in.
âSo, youâll come next time?â Jan checks, opening her eyes again and looking up at her.
âOnly so you can keep your sanity.â
âOnly for my sanityâ Jan pretends that is the only reason that RosĂ© agreed to it, but she knows that sheâll do it just because she wants her to. Then she snuggles further into RosĂ© appreciatively, closing her eyes again as RosĂ© resumes stroking fingers through her hair.
There are a few moments of still and quiet before RosĂ© chuckles to herself and Jan just knows sheâs going to say something stupid. âSo⊠is there like an initiation ceremony?â
