“Fuck,” Ronald muttered, but there was no soul alive to hear him. The dead littered the ground like snow upon the mountains. Ronald waded through his fellow men and those who had killed them with a bone-deep weariness. A body spluttered and wheezed as his boot made contact, pleading eyes gazing up at him, squinting into the low winter sun. He might have rasped for help, pleaded to be saved, but Ronald was too quick with his sword. The man bore colours of his enemy. But he'd not driven the blade into his chest for the sake of King Lucius’ petty war—he was showing mercy, ending needless suffering the best way he knew how.
