The Vegreville Pysanka
In the town of Vegreville, in Alberta, Canada is "The World's Largest Easter Egg", an amazing work by Ron Resch completed in 1975 and dedicated in 1976. The anodized aluminum skin is designed in the pattern of a 'pysanka', a traditional Ukranian Easter Egg.

Ron Resch (Ronald Dale Resch, 1939 - 2009 ) was an artist, computer scientist, and applied geometrist, known for his work involving folding paper, Origami Tessellations and 3D polyhedrons.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Resch studied art at the University of Iowa receiving his Master of Fine Arts, and went on to become a professor of Computer Science at the University of Utah.[8]
He famously designed the Vegreville egg, the first physical structure designed entirely with computer-aided geometric modelling software.

I've been researching Star Trek: The Motion Picture for an upcoming podcast, and found out about Ron Resch, who designed the oddly articulated hexagonal orifice that lets the Enterprise enter V'ger. The fascinating documentary about his work, above, makes me wonder why more of his 3D structural advances haven't entered the mainstream by now.
