Recently watched Ron's Gone Wrong and as far as children's films commenting on social media go, I do really appreciate its nuance. Like the lesson it takes away isn't "social media is inherently bad and evil" but rather "social media sites try to use algorithms to maximize engagement for profit and does so by isolating you from external socialization and only trying to connect people based solely on common interests that can be marketed to without accounting for compatible personalities or general human abnormalities. But it has the capacity to better foster solid healthy friendships if it's allowed to be a little imperfect and not 100% optimized so that it leaves room for people to form relationships without it."
And like, that's an extremely nuanced take for a children's movie that actually does feel like it engages with what social media does underlyingly. That's not even getting to how kids are being incentivized to kinda form weird reverse parasocial relationships where they perform to become popular on social media for the approval of hundreds, thousands, and sometimes millions of people they have mostly no individual relationships with which the film also touches on

What if I brought a tiger into my home and then said happy new year?
Ok I randomly watched Ronโs Gone Wrong on Disney+ and guys?? Itโs good. I was honestly ready to cringe, but I think they really nailed the youth culture at the moment. I only say this cuz Iโm currently living at home, and I can imagine my sisters in this movie.
I was obsessed with books like My Side of the Mountain when I was younger. Itโs interestingโ this movie has a lot going on. Itโs got the โbreakupโ scene, but thatโs at like the mid point. I figured that would come, and then there would be a resolution and an end, but there was still half a movie left. After that we got a whole โboy and his dog run awayโ arc which I ADORED like yes, this kid is such a kid! Kids would absolutely act like this and think itโs a good idea!! AND a heist at the end?
I also loved how blatantly the movie called out companies like Facebook. Like yes the friendly robot is absolutely going to be exploited to sell things to children, and the way itโs gonna do this is by watching them 24/7! And the guy in charge doesnโt care about the consumerโ he cares about their money.
Basically Iโm extremely impressed with this movie. Itโs definitely for a younger audience, but like man. It was funny, the characters were likeable, and it somehow nailed the youth culture rather then tried to sadly replicate it and come off as terrifyingly cringe. It also didnโt feel preachy, something a lot of โtechnology badโ movies do. This one is up there with The Mitchellโs VS the Machines. If you have a Disney+ account I would absolutely recommend checking this movie out!!
