Fall SMC 2011 ROMology
ROMology with Erin Kerr Ages 11 to 14 October 15- Welcome to the Royal Ontario Museum...one of the most diverse museums in the world! What is the purpose of museums, and what makes us unique. We’ll explore the history of our buildings, the purpose for our collections, and some of the ROM’s favourite artifacts, all before opening! October 22- The ROM’s founder, Charles T. Currelly, worked as an archaeologist at the turn of the last century, and today we still have researchers excavating around the world. We’ll visit the site of an important ROM excavation in modern-day Iran. Today is meet the instructor day! Meet me by the locker from 8:45-9 am! October 29- The research being done in the ROM’s Natural History Department is just as important and diverse as in World Cultures. Today we visit the Schad Gallery of Biodiversity and explore some of the zoological and environmental research that help ROM researchers understand the wonders and challenges of the world we live in. Dress up and preview your spectacular Halloween costumes at SMC today before your Halloween adventure! November 5- Many ROM researchers are Anthropologists...people in the business of studying people...what makes our species unique, why we behave the way we do, and where we come from? From Canada’s First Peoples to West Africa, curators travel around the world in an attempt to understand how we work. November 12- Palaeontology is about more than dinosaurs. Today we explore some of the most cutting-edge research being done by ROM staff... how complex life on Earth began over 500 million years ago. November 19- The ROM’s gallery of Ancient Egypt represents some of the museum’s earliest collecting. How did Antjau, a 2600 year old Egyptian, come to reside in Toronto? We will explore how the field of Egyptology has changed over the past 100 years. November 26- The museum’s collection of rocks and minerals is among the world’s best, especially our extensive collection of meteorites. Today we’ll visit samples from the Moon, Mars, and Vesta- one of the largest asteroids in our solar system’s asteroid belt. December 3- On our last day we will visit two more of the ROM’s own special exhibitions- The Art of Collecting, and Maya: Secrets of their Ancient World. How and why are these galleries put together, and what do they tell the world about the ROM’s wonderful curatorial staff and research?
