Soldier of Uncertainty
Romena sat on the shoreline outside of Silvermoon staring into the red sky as evening slowly set upon her. She was in her armor; after time spent away from it, she wanted to get used to its weight. The metal was heavier than she remembered it. In many ways, she still felt like a broken version of the woman she was back in Northrend.
She used to be so much more certain. After the scourge invasion and the dead scar, Romena had never felt more sure about her path. She joined the blood knights and fought in war after war, never doubting the acts she committed in that time. It was right and necessary. It was war, and war was about her survival and the survival of her people.
That was how Romena survived. Eventually, she lost her light and was more a killing machine than a soldier. The cloudy memories she had of that period of her life sobered her.
Now, Romena was plagued with doubt, and it felt like she was the only one. She was hearing similar sentiments from the Sin'dorei soldiers rallying behind the warchief. Morality had no place in war. Calls for brutality and pulling prosperity from a river of blood. When she was a younger elf, she would have raised her voice to join in the battle chants. Just a few years ago, the ferocity would have fed her bloodlust.
Romena could feel the light burning in her chest. It was warm and strong, but she could almost feel fissures in it. Her connection to the light was beautiful and powerful, but alarmingly fragile. By rejoining the battlefield, she worried she was risking that connection, and in many ways, what was left of her life.
At the same time, Romena felt the call. She hoped it was the Light's call. She prayed she was following the right path. She was a healer now, but when she confined herself to an infirmary, it felt like she could be doing more. For better or worse, her people were fighting and dying. They were defending the homeland, but they were also fighting on the frontlines. If she was not there with them, her conscience had to suffer the knowledge that she had not done more to prevent the pain and suffering.
Romena was her light and she was her shield. As much as she wanted to deny it, she was her sword. She pledged to the Sunguard that she would do as she was ordered. Whatever had to be done would be done for the good of her people. Maybe her compatriots were right and the only way their people could ensure survival was through war and blood and thunder. She hoped they were, since she had made her decision and cast her lot.
And yet, under a blood red sky, she still felt doubt where she once felt conviction.
